Introducing Raymond Comvalius – Microsoft Ignite Community Reporter

Raymond Comvalius

Hi, I am Raymond Comvalius. I am an independent infrastructure specialist and trainer from the Netherlands. As an independent specialist I try to help companies move their infrastructure technology to the next version level. I combine this with training and presentations at conferences.

Being a technology specialist is closest to my passion as I soon found out after I became an IT manager in the beginning of my IT career that started when I learned myself to program in high school. I still love the feeling of getting something new to work after a new learning experience. Knowing that new things to learn will always be around ensures me that I will keep doing this for the rest of my life.

You can contact me on various social channels:

If you could give one piece of advice to someone just starting their career in IT, what would you tell them?

You must love IT to keep up. But if that is the case, get ready for a lifetime learning experience. Learn new stuff and share what you have learned. Never be afraid to admit that there is stuff you don't know or don't understand. If you don't understand the explanation, the explanation wasn't good enough.

How do you stay up to date with changing technologies and updates?

I have a huge list of people I follow on Twitter and LinkedIn. This is where I get warned about new developments and new journeys start.

How has IT changed since you first started your career?

20 years ago, IT was still limited. It was not so hard to find starting point and define goals. Today there is so much to choose from. You definitely have to focus and find niches of expertise to build while you are exploring what parts of IT appeal to you.

What advice would you give to a first-time Microsoft Ignite attendee?

In 2012 I wrote a blog for the Springboard Series Newsletter about the very first time I visited a big Microsoft conference. At that time the conference was called TechEd. But the story is still true today. I reposted the story on my blog at nextxpert.com.

What are you packing for Microsoft Ignite?

Pack light! Bring comfortable clothing and the technology you need on a daily basis. I always use my time in the US to update my wardrobe. But make sure you have space to bring back more than what you arrived with.

Why should people follow you for Microsoft Ignite coverage?

I will follow what's going on in Windows and Security. Today this includes a lot of cloud technology as well.
