Introducing the IT Roadmap planning tool preview

"It depends..."

The answers to many questions in IT start with these two words. "What is the best way to deploy a new operating system?" "Which security configurations should I use in SharePoint or Exchange" "How should we set up our directory services?" Answers to all of these questions depend on what's important to you, what's worked in the past and what your expectations or your users' expectations are.

 

Those questions also just scratch the surface of the areas covered by Microsoft 365 services. There are a ton of options when you consider Office 365 - including email, intranet, file sharing, voice, apps and more, Windows 10 - including apps, servicing, deployment, security options and more, and Enterprise Mobility + Security - including identity, MDM, PC management, information protection and more.

 

To help with this, we've been working on a new tool called the IT Roadmap for Microsoft 365 - as a way to see your options, target what you want and build long-term set of deployment and configuration plans. The IT Roadmap is a web-based tool built for IT, so it's different from Microsoft's product roadmaps that communicate Microsoft's future product plans. The IT Roadmap is about helping you form your plans.

 

As part of the process, it highlights the capabilities corresponding to all the services represented by Microsoft 365 across 4 levels, each level containing multiple attributes that differentiate it from previous levels. Using the tool, you select the services you want to prioritize, select what best describes how you deliver the service now, and then identify what best describes what you want to do using the Future Level slider.

The red dots above then indicate things to implement, and you can mark items green that are already in-place, or opt-out of items by marking them grey. The tool will calculate the capabilities and mapped features, display links to corresponding how-to content, offer direct links (when possible) to where desired configurations are set in Office 365 or Azure portals, and provide details for getting FastTrack-supported help with your implementation.

The IT Roadmap will show key options around the core capabilities that span Microsoft 365 workloads, including identity management, messaging, collaboration, intranet and search, PC deployment and management, and meeting services. As options change or capabilities are added, the underlying model will continue to receive updates to corresponding services and technologies.

After you identify your current and set your future states, the IT Roadmap builds you a personalized action plan. This plan is a comprehensive, auto-generated document based on your inputs during the assessment phase and includes:

  • a description of how the IT Roadmap works,
  • a personalized IT Roadmap action plan for IT admins,
  • links to specific configurations and how-to guidance for each highlighted capability,
  • assessment of IT effort, user impact and whether FastTrack assistance is available, and
  • next steps to take once you've worked through the IT Roadmap action plan.

The IT Roadmap document is editable, so you can add or remove sections, change formatting or branding elements, assign tasks to individuals or teams, incorporate timelines and more.

Try the IT Roadmap Preview

 

There are two ways to try the IT Roadmap preview. The screenshots above are from the light version of the IT Roadmap tool and available for anyone to try. The full version - as shown in the Microsoft Mechanics show - is available to Microsoft partners as part of the Business Value Programs. The full version requires partner authentication, saves your state so you can return to it later, offers additional controls to toggle audience-specific tone (IT admin, business manager, security manager, and end user), and has additional navigation and filtering options.

 

The IT Roadmap receives continuous updates to technologies, descriptions, resource and configuration links. As part of the IT pro community, we'd like you to try it out first and give us your feedback.

As everyone starts testing, I wanted to point out a few known issues that we're addressing in the preview, which only apply to the Light/unauthenticated version:

 

Fit and finish:

  1. Page headers and start page fonts will be matched

  2. Assessment Summary - The dotted lines indicating "Future Level" are currently not rendering

IT Roadmap doc report:

  1. Business view section not populating as intended

  2. Security considerations display IT admin descriptions twice currently

 

In addition to these four items, we'll also continue adding action links to direct configurations and linking to more text and media-based resources for highlighted actions.

 

Will add updates here as the tools continue to evolve.

Working on the reporting side now and still adding to the service and content mappings.

with me getting the latest windows 10 after a few problems and my knowledge I have solved the speed issue

the CDPsvc (user) got rid of those straight away as they cause so much crap on the system also the dont delay the startup setting

also a couple of tweaks and some other stuff windows 10 fall runs like a dream the gaming side and confined system error corrections works really well

so good job Microsoft shows if we think and work together we improve and things are smooth sailing

Great tool! Just wanted to draw your attention to the fact that the “view your it roadmap” button does not work.

@Jeremy Chapman (OFFICE IT PRO) Can you share how to get access to the full version of the tool? I have access the Business Value Programs URL, but I don't see how to get the IT Roadmap Tool from there

How do we get access to the full version?  When I sign in with my partner account it goes around in a loop with an error signing in.

I've run into this before with the Business Value Platform tools. It seems to be an authentication issue for first run experience that loads the tutorial modal up front. Can you try to access the transform.microsoft.com site and login via Internet Explorer?  

No good in Chrome, Edge or IE.  Just loops.

I'm having the same problem as @Jeffrey Knibb

No matter which browser I use, in Private browsing or normal I end up in an access denied authentication loop. Is there a partner level or training requirement to gain access?

Are you supposed to select just one audience and fill it out or all 4? if you do more than one will it overwrite the others? This part is pretty confusing.

Edit: I can run this in Chrome but in IE the browser crashes and in Edge I get the endless refresh loop.

Thanks Dale for the feedback. The Audience-specific language is just a real-time toggle to adjust terminology and in some cases visibility of capabilities. It doesn't impact the assessment or recommendations. Think of it as more "What does multi-factor auth (MFA) mean?" (IT Audience), you'd answer, "You know when you sign into a website or app and enter a password and then it sends a text message to your phone with a numeric code to complete login?" - that translation is for the business or end user audience type. You're just using the toggles for the descriptions that you're most comfortable with or if there is a term that's unfamiliar, you can use for help with deciphering it - and they are like different languages or dialects at times. In theory it could work both ways as well, so that if a salesperson or someone less technically inclined wanted to learn the "IT-speak" for referring to capabilities, they could toggle back the other way.

 

Reply to edit: I believe this is an issue with the entire transform.microsoft.com site. We're working on it. I've also ran into this auth issue recently in Edge, but IE works for me.
