This is an ongoing series on succeeding in the modern workplace.  It’s based on my recent experiences and I’m hoping it’s of interest for those both new in the workplace as well those more experienced.

Back to work

I write this on the train, on my way to my first job in nearly two years.  My career break was not entirely planned but the opportunity was afforded me after taking redundancy from my last job. That job lasted over 15 years, it was a challenging role spanning lots of experience, technology and more besides.

The job introduced me to Office 365, which I’m grateful for.  I worked with Office 365 early on from around 2012 and I took to it very quickly.  I’m a fully paid up member to the modern workplace, a platform I believe where everyone is welcome and people can get there best work done.

I have had a passion for Office 365 ever since. During my career break I have explored Office 365 even more, I have had three dev tenants over this time, taken two Office 365 exams, following up with related edX courses, became a Trusted Contributor on the Tech Community, been active in the wider community with Office 365 Ninjas and also contributed to TechNet with articles and resources.

New beginnings

My new job is as a Microsoft Cloud Administrator with a strong emphasis on Office 365 and Azure, providing consultancy and support. It’s a small company but there are big opportunities to work and learn more about client needs, providing them with solutions that enable them to be agile and more productive.

It all happened very quickly, I worked on my CV, scanned job sites even got around to setting up LinkedIn, which I had never got around to previously. I got an interview from some of the first jobs I applied for and before I knew it, I was offered a job.  Less than a week all told, from application to job offer!

I accepted the job soon after, looking forward to rejoining the workforce and furthering my career.  It seems strange to say but I’m more ambitious than I have ever been before to make a difference and contribute as much as I can.

My train is about to arrive, my first work day in two years. I’m working outside of London which is a change in itself and I can’t wait to get started!

Starting a new job

9 hours later

I’m now on the train home, it’s been a good day. It’s a friendly work environment , I have enjoyed meeting my new work colleagues and finding out more about the role.

Lots to take in, names, facts, procedures but it’s rewarding to be part of a team again. It’s early days, with lots more to learn but it’s nice to be back, so to speak.

First day tips

  • Find out about any the dress code in case there are any specific requirements
  • Have any required documentation ready, for payroll etc.
  • Know who to ask for on the first day and what time to arrive
  • Don’t try to do much on the first day, it can be overwhelming and it will probably take weeks to get fully up to speed
  • Be yourself, don’t be too over eager, just take in the essentials to begin with and learning the ropes
  • Consider taking notes.  Make notes especially for things like login details, names, email addresses, phone numbers, anything you might need to refer back to.

Love reading this series, Cian! Simple and practical tips that can help just about anyone in the industry - whether someone new to tech, or a long-time tech veteran figuring out new roles etc.

Keep them coming :)
