Generally speaking, Excel does not handle calculations with formatting very well (that requires custom VBA functions which are generaly quite slow). It can do the reverse out of the box, color things based on values in cells. That is called conditional formatting.
So if you want to mark rows in a sheet to do something with them your best bet is normally to enter something meaningful into a cell on that row.
