Published Feb 12 2013 02:00 PM 92.3K Views

Earlier last year, we announced that Exchange 2010 Service Pack 3 would be coming in the first half of 2013. Later, we updated the timeframe to Q1 2013. Today, we're pleased to announce the availability of Exchange Server 2010 Service Pack 3, which is ready to download.

Service Pack 3 is a fully slipstreamed version of Exchange 2010. The following new features and capabilities are included within SP3:

  • Coexistence with Exchange 2013:Customers who want to introduce Exchange Server 2013 into their existing Exchange 2010 infrastructure will need the coexistence changes shipping in SP3.

NOTE: Exchange 2010 SP3 allows Exchange 2010 servers to coexist with Exchange 2013 CU1, which is also scheduled to be released in Q1 2013. Customers can test and validate this update in a representative lab environment prior to rolling out in their production environments as an important coexistence preparatory step before introducing Exchange Server 2013 CU1.

  • Support for Windows Server 2012: With SP3, you can install and deploy Exchange Server 2010 on computers that are running Windows Server 2012.
  • Support for Internet Explorer 10: With SP3, you can use IE10 to connect to Exchange 2010.
  • Customer Requested Fixes: All fixes contained within update rollups released before SP3 will also be contained within SP3. Details of our regular Exchange 2010 release rhythm can be found in Exchange 2010 Servicing.

In addition to the customer reported issues resolved in previous rollups, this service pack also resolves the issues that are described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base (KB) articles:

Exchange 2010 SP3 FAQ

Here are answers to some frequently asked questions.

  • Q. Does Exchange 2010 SP3 include the fixes in Exchange 2010 SP2 RU6?
    A. Yes. Service Packs are cumulative - they include all fixes included in previous RUs and service packs. Although Exchange 2010 SP2 RU6 was released on the same day as Exchange 2010 SP3, fixes in RU6 are included in SP3.

  • Q. Does Exchange 2010 SP3 include the security fix mentioned in Microsoft Security Bulletin MS13-012?
Yes, fix for the vulneraiblity in MS13-012 is included in Exchange 2010 SP2 RU6, and (as stated above) fixes from SP2 RU6 are inclued in SP3. We recommend reviewing the related security bulletin before applying an update that contains security fixes.

  • Q. Why release RU6 for SP2 at all if all fixes are included in SP3?
Exchange 2010 SP2 is a supported service pack (see Exchange Server Support Lifecycle). Customers typically deploy update rollups quickly but take longer to deploy service packs.

  • Q. Is Exchange 2010 SP3 compatible with WMF 3.0/PowerShell 3.0?
    A. Exchange team has validated and supports Exchange 2010 SP3 running on Windows Server 2012, which comes with PS 3.0 by default. Please note that even when running on Windows Server 2012, Exchange 2010 SP3 will still use only PowerShell 2.0 functionality. Exchange team has not validated Exchange 2010 SP3 running on earlier server OSes (2008, 2008 R2) with WMF3 / PS3 installed, and we therefore do not recommend that configuration.

  • Q. Does Exchange 2010 SP3 require an Active Directory schema update?
    A. Yes, as mentioned in Exchange 2010 SP3 Release Notes, an Active Directory schema is required.

  • Q. Can I install Exchange 2013 RTM in my Exchange 2010 organization after upgrading to Exchange 2010 SP3?
    A. As mentioned in the post, coexistence of Exchange 2013 in an Exchange 2010 SP3 org requires Exchange 2013 CU1, also scheduled for release in this quarter (Q1 2013).

  • Q. It's great that Exchange 2010 SP3 is supported on Windows Server 2012! Can I upgrade the OS my Exchange Server's running on from Windows Server 2008/2008 R2 to Windows Server 2012 after installing SP3?
    A. No. Upgrading the operating system after Exchange Server installation is not supported. You would have to uninstall Exchange, upgrade the OS, then reinstall Exchange. Or install Exchange 2010 SP3 on a fresh Windows 2012 install.

  • Q. Is MRM 1.0 supported on Exchange 2010 SP3?
    A. Yes, MRM 1.0 (Managed Folders) is a supported feature in Exchange 2010. We replaced MRM 1.0 management support in EMC with MRM 2.0 (Retention tags) in Exchange 2010 SP1. You can still use the Shell to manage MRM 1.0.

  • Q. Will I be able to restore and mount database backups created before a server is upgraded to SP3?
    A. Yes. When you restore and mount the database, it will be updated.

  • Q. Does Exchange 2010 SP3 add support for Active Directory Rights Management Services (AD RMS) in Cryptographic Mode 2?
    A. Yes, Information Rights Management (IRM) features in Exchange 2010 SP3 support AD RMS running in Cryptographic Mode 2.

  • Q. Is Exchange 2010 SP3 supported with <My great third-party Exchange add-on/tool>?
    A. Please contact the partner / third-party software vendor for this info. We recommend testing in a representative non-production environment before you deploy in production.

@Vinícius, upgrading an OS with Exchange already installed is not supported.

After Updating, is impossible to reinstall the previously uninstalled UM language packs, as the SP3 update require.

The new downloaded files, like: "UMLanguagePack.xx-XX.msi", downloaded from MS, cannot be installed using the documented procedure:

setup.com /AddUmLanguagePack:xx-XX /s: ... etc.

The answer is always: UMLanguagePack.xx-xx.exe not found.

Trying to execute the .msi directly also doesn't work.

@Brian this should be mentioned in the release notes...

So, to finally go to Windows Server 2012 we will need another machine to set up Windows Server 2012 with Exchange 2010 SP3 (or Exchange 2013 CU1 when it's released), setup the coexistence, migrate everything and shutdown the old Windows Server 2008R2 to finally raise our domain functional level to 2012 Server?

Thanks in advance,

Not applicable

@Vinícius, yes that is the same procedure as previous releases such as when Exchange 2007 SP3 brought support for Windows Server 2008 R2. If you want to move to the newer OS you must build and migrate to new Exchange servers. The Domain and Forest functional levels are not related to Exchange member servers. Those have to do with with your Domain Controllers.

@Brian Day, based on the FAQ above: Q. Is Exchange 2010 SP3 compatible with WMF 3.0/PowerShell 3.0?

A. No. Exchange 2013 SP3 does not support WMF 3.0/PowerShell 3.0. Although on Windows Server 2012 you can have WMF3/PS3, Exchange 2010 SP3 will require and use PowerShell 2.0. Does this mean that you cannot install WMF3.0 on Server 2012 if you install Exchange 2010 SP3 or do you have to launch powershell in ver 2?

Technet library does not have Exchange 2013 co-existence with Exchange 2010 Sp3.  Would it take some time before it gets publised?

Are there upgrade instructions available for installing SP3 into a current Exchange 2010 environment?

Not applicable

I'm also curious if you can install WMF 3.0 on a Windows 7 machine running the Exchange 2010 SP3 management tools.

More and more things are needing PS 3.0 and this still being a blocking issue is problematic.

Not applicable

I think what is meant that it is supported to run Exchange 2010 SP3 with PowerShell 3.0 installed, but Exchange 2010 SP3 will not use it and will instead use 2.0.

On the download page is the build number correct? After installing SP3 on my SBS 2011 test server I get a build number of 14.03.0123.003, not 14.03.0123.004!

So does Server 2012 = Windows 8?  Would love to run EMC on a Surface Pro!

Not applicable

@Exchange Joe,

There is no EMC in Exchange 2013. It is all web-based through the ECP or via PS.

Not applicable

@Exchange Joe, yes 2010 SP3 Management Tools can be installed on Windows 8 64-bit. We're in the process of updating the supportability matrix to call it out. The only requirement is the machine must be domain joined.

Hi guys, appreciate the team engaging the questions here.  Looking forward to cu1.  Can you speak to any concerns WRT Lync 2013 integration - or are we ready to go once CU1 hits?

If I have Exchange 2010 SP3 installed, and accidentally say ran /PrepareSchema and /PrepareAD from the 2013 RTM installation media, do I have a problem?  e.g. Can I still install Exchange 2010 Servers as I did not continue to install 2013 RTM?

We're currently running Exchange 2010 SP2 in Tenant Mode (Hosting Mode from SP1). Can we update to SP3 or does the ad schema changes conflicts with /Hosting mode?

Not applicable

@Alan, no worries.... you can continue installing more 2010 servers as long as there is still at least one 2010 server still in the org currently.

Any word on the erroneous "Post-move cleanup failed" and subsequent retries when moving a mailbox?  I didn't see anything about it in the RU6 notes.

That adds three unnecessary minutes to each mailbox move, and while that may not be a big dea in the long run, it's a bit of an issue while I'm still migrating from 2003.  :\

Not applicable

@Paul N - Unfortunately, that fix did not make it into SP2 RU6 or SP3.  However a fix is on the way.  If this is becoming an problem for your migration, feel free to engage Microsoft Support as they can get you an interim update.

@Ross Smith, is there a KB article or reference number for that issue/Interim update, we have the same issue as Paul N, and i'd like to get it resolved soon as possible. Would help to make the request easier. Ta.

@Stevel99 - KB number 2763065 should help you with support.

I just would like to install EMC on Windows 8 workstation and you know it's required schema update as well so if I update schema to SP3 during the EMC installation does it affect the existing Exchange 2010 SP2 organization which in the same Active Directory?

AD RMS Cryptographic Mode 2 and Exchange 2010 Information Rights Management is supportable?

Will i have to uninstall my third party cert (go daddy) and reinstall it to install SP3 like i did SP 2 does anyone know?

Not applicable

@Huseyin, preparing only the AD schema will not affect the current 2010 SP2 servers in the org.

@Randy, having to remove/reinstall a cert for a SP upgrade should not be required back in SP2 nor today in SP3.

Thank you. Checked himself. Everything works (IRM and Transport Rules in AD RMS Cryptographic Mode 2).

@Ross

KB 2763065 doesn't appear to be valid; I receive an "Oops! The page you are looking for may have a new location, or is no longer available" if I try to go to it directly, and I get "Sorry, no results found for: 2763065" if I try to search for it.  :(

I currently have problems with Exchange Server 2010 SP2 installed on Windows Server 2010 R2. It generates a lot of errors, for example MSExchangeRepl (2141, 2121), MSExchange ADAccess (2114, 2102, 2080, 2078, 2068), MSExchangeIS (1121), MSExchangeSA (1031), MSExchangeMailSubmission (1027), MSExchangeRPC (1008). ..

I hope that SP3 will solve these problems.

According to the documentation, you don't need 2013 CU1 for Coexistence:

Exchange 2013 Coexistence support

You must install Exchange 2010 SP3 if you want to run Microsoft Exchange Server 2013 in a coexistence mode. You can't perform an in-place upgrade from Exchange 2010 to Exchange 2013. However, you can install an Exchange 2013 server into the existing Exchange 2010 organization after you install Exchange 2010 SP 3. For more information about how to install an Exchange 2013 server into the existing organization, see Install Exchange 2013 in an Existing Exchange 2010 Organization.

After you perform this procedure, your organization will be running in a coexistence mode. You can maintain this mode indefinitely, or you can immediately complete the upgrade to Exchange 2013 by moving all resources from Exchange 2010 to Exchange 2013, and then decommissioning the Exchange 2010 servers. For more information about how to upgrade to Exchange 2013, see Upgrade from Exchange 2010 to Exchange 2013.

It's also confirmed by a co-worker who performed a migration from 201 to 2013 in the same AD.

@Sebastian Mair I am going to guess the users who can't delete messages are using Outlook in online mode.

Set up mailbox account on a nother machine, just temporarily, to run Outlook in cached Exchange mode.

The same thing happened to a few of my users. They were RDS thin client users is why we were using online mode.

Not applicable

@Arjan - thanks for bringing this up. I have submitted a request to have this modified.

Please note that coexisting with E2013 RTM is not supported. It might appear that it does not matter for your specific scenario, but trust us when we say that CU1 is required for you to be in coexistence with Exchange 2013.

Why was it delayed to SP1?

We can't move to SP3 anytime soon because it requires schema change.  What's wrong with IE10 with SP2 RU5/6?

Can Exchange 2010 SP3 be installed onto SBS 2011 servers?

@Sergey Bezpalov: Yes, AD RMS in Cryptographic Mode 2 is supported in Exchange 2010 SP3. FAQ updated and docs will be updated to reflect this.

Can anyone confirm that the Exchange 2010 EMC with SP3 will run on Windows 8?

Not applicable

@Davis:

Per the FAQ:

Q. Is Exchange 2010 SP3 compatible with WMF 3.0/PowerShell 3.0?

A. No. Exchange 2010 SP3 does not support WMF 3.0/PowerShell 3.0. Although on Windows Server 2012 you can have WMF3/PS3, Exchange 2010 SP3 will require and use PowerShell 2.0.

My thought is that 2012 can also mean Windows 8.  And Brian Day mentioned earlier:

"@Exchange Joe, yes 2010 SP3 Management Tools can be installed on Windows 8 64-bit. We're in the process of updating the supportability matrix to call it out. The only requirement is the machine must be domain joined."

A little confused.  We have a 2008 R2 utility server that helpdesk uses for management of Exchange 2010, and now we need to add the Lync 2013 admin tools to it as well.  Lync 2013 admin tools require Powershell 3.0, so how can I make both sets of admin tools function on the same 2008 r2 server?

Not applicable

@Paul Newell

Thanks for your response....I had read the comments here and the FAQ....but I was hoping to get confirmation that it does actually work on Win 8 by someone who has tried it.  With 2012 and Win 8 sharing code base I was assuming that if it would install on 2012 then it would install on 8....

So you tease us with the need for SP3 in Exchange 2010, then it gets released and now we find out we need to keep waiting for CU1 of 2013? They should have just waited to release them both at the same time.... Fail!

Sorry, why was it delayed to Exchange 2013 CU1?

If we apply the 2010 SP3 schema to our forest, will we need to apply an additional schema update from the Exchange 2013 CU1 update, or once 2013 CU1 is released will we be able to install 2013 CU1 without the need for additional schema extensions ontop of the 2010 SP3 extension?
