Beta Update & Your Questions

Wednesday was a big day for us, and I'm pleased to tell you that the response to Exchange 2010 has been awesome! In the last two days, more than 10,000 people have downloaded the beta. Along and with the 2,000+ educational institutions and 5 million people already testing Exchange 2010 as a service, we are well on our way to delivering the most tested, most solid version of Exchange ever.

If you haven't had time to download the beta, stop, drop and download. If you don't have time just now, do the next best thing and check out these reviews:

I have also seen a lot of interest and questions around Office 2010 and the next milestones for Exchange, so I wanted to jump on here and answer a couple of the burning questions right away.

OWA sounds great. What about Outlook 2010?
As you heard on Wednesday, we are focused on delivering a powerful experience across the PC, phone, and browser. We know everyone lives in Outlook, and that's where you will see tons of improvements like:

  • The Ribbon and Quick Steps: In Office 2007, the ribbon made commands much more discoverable - now it's time to bring that same efficiency to Outlook. My favorite part of the ribbon in Outlook is a new feature called Quick Steps. You can set up one-click Quick Steps for the most common email tasks you do every day. For example, my favorite Quick Step helps me see all mail addressed directly to me first - a quick and simple way to manage my e-mail.
  • Speed - It's just faster. Even with multi-gig mailboxes, Outlook starts up on a dime. Plus, not only is search blazing fast, but you can find what you want again and again with a single click using some of the new tools in the ribbon.
  • Security: Of course, you rely on Outlook for IRM, and we've added in multiple layers of security for attachments as well.
  • Calendaring & Scheduling: Organizing meetings with a bunch of busy people can be like solving a Rubik's cube. In Outlook 2010, you get a "solve" button (figuratively) that can reduce tasks - like scheduling team meetings or replying to emails with a meeting request - to one click.
  • Extensibility: Have those add-ins that you just can't live without? Outlook will not only continue to support a wide variety of your favorite add-ins, but we've redesigned the experience to ensure that no matter how many add-ins you use - starting up, shutting down, and getting things done in Outlook will be faster than ever.
The place to get the real scoop on Outlook is over at the Outlook blog http://blogs.msdn.com/outlook/default.aspx.

I want to get my hands on Outlook 2010. Will there be a public beta?
Yes, there will be a public beta. In the third quarter of this year, there is a technical preview in the works. A 'technical preview' is marketing-speak for limited beta, so a few tens of thousands of people will be able to get Office 2010 at that time. A technical preview is used to get input in the early development stages, and for those of you attending TechEd, you'll hear even more about this. After that, there will be a public beta, when everyone and their dog can try Office 2010. Then, with all that awesome feedback, we'll ship Office 2010 in the first half of next year.

How much will Exchange 2010 cost?
We haven't announced that yet, but stay tuned for more details in the next several weeks.

Why are you calling it Exchange 2010 if you're shipping it in 2009?
It's all about the 'wave'. Exchange is a critical part of the 'wave 14' of innovations, which includes Office, SharePoint and other Microsoft business productivity software. While Exchange is first out of the gate, we are building these products with a common vision for the new world of business and the capabilities organizations need to succeed today and in the future. Plus, saying "twenty ten" sounds way more cool.

Thanks for your help in making Exchange great, and keep your questions coming.

Crystal

I like changes that are made for clusters and storage groups.

My question is about CAL's. Can I expect a licence for Outlook 2010 with enterpise CAL without Software Assurance?

Thank you.

Where is the 32 bit version? We are using older servers in our test environment and they, I know, are not x64 capable. The req. section mentions the x32 version for testing and learning and would be great for us.

thanks

Hey

I installed the Beta on a couple of VMs, went very smoothly and everything just worked.

However, am I the only one to really dislike the new OWA interface? It just doensn't look..how can I put this..tidy? I MUCH prefer the 2007 Premium, and even Light OWA experience.

Where can I submit small bugs? I've found some minor errors (language-wise for example) that just aren't worth making a thread on technet about.
I've seen the button 'Submit suggestions or report bugs to the Microsoft Exchange Team' but it links to Microsoft connect. Here it says "page not found: the content you requested can either be not found or you don't have the proper right's" (translated).

We're just getting ready to migrate from Exchange 2003 to 2007. Now Exchange 2010 is around the corner. What kind of upgrade paths are available if we're running Exchange 2007 on Server 2008? Can you upgrade or is it migrate mailbox only?

With all this excitement about Exchange 2010 - I wanted to ask if there is still an Exchange 2007 sp2 planned?  if so, whats the timetable?

Although they say OWA is cross-platform there are lots of things still missing when viewing in Firefox or Safari. Important things like "Mail Settings" within EX2010 > OWA > Options > Settings!

to Mike Crowley:
Sure there will be SP2 some day. why do you ask?

to Max Walford:
Don't you think this might be firefox and safary problems? Also, can you say OWA doesn't work there at all? No? That's just 'cause they do not strictly follow the standards.

Hi Brian,
There will be no in-place upgrade to Exchange 2010 from Exchange 2007, you will have to move mailbox.

Matt - do you work for Microsoft?  This is the first definitive statement on Exchange 2010 upgrades and I want to be sure this information is accurate.

MaximumExchange - Why do I ask?  umm, lets see... because I want to know if a service pack will come out, or if were just gonna keep doing rollups.  Where do you get your information that there will be a E2k7 sp2?  I dont think this is such a strange question as obviously service packs stop after a period of time.  typically when the dev focus shifts to the new version as it obviously has with E2010

"Transition is the scenario in which you upgrade an existing Exchange organization to Microsoft Exchange Server 2007. To perform the transition, you must move data from the existing Exchange servers to new Exchange 2010 servers. For example, when upgrading from an Exchange 2007 organization to an Exchange 2010 organization, you perform a transition."

Definitely they will come out (dunnow when). Rollup is a smaller pack of code updates, and Service Pack is usually some kinda great changes, such as IMF in Exchange 2003 SP1, or PF in Exchange 2007 SP1. It's not only a debugging code updates. So why should they stop with E12 SPs? Makes sence?

Well, I'm Exchange expert for about 10 years recently, and I see it's evolution history.

I'm encountering the same issue as Hector Alvarez : "winrm cannot process the request  because the input xml contains an invalid attribute or element name" when trying to launch the shell or within the console.
Only the local exchange shell is working.

Is there a way to repair the installation ?

JB and Oliver, I ended up redoing my lab, Fortunately, I used VMs so I destroyed them, recreated the entire environment and now it works fine. Don't waste time waiting for an answer, remember it is Beta so there may not even be one yet.
