text is not appearing in cells as I type - only in formula bar - Mac version v16.23

I have seen this issue posted but never a solution.  Started happening 14th March after updates to latest OS 10.14.3 and latest Excel 16.23

I have the same thing following an update which seems to have messed with my excel. Any solution appreciated
