creating a pivot table in Excel: need help

I'm trying to create a pivot table by following this instruction:

 

"Create a Pivot Table on a new sheet where the row label is "troop" and the value is the count of troops."

 

I was able to create the pivot table by selecting the "troop" column from the main sheet. However, the instruction did not specify where to find the "count of troops" value. Do I need to set the formula for "count" on the main sheet first, or is this something I should do within the pivot table itself? Thanks!
