Excel changinig data

Excel is changing original data in a column from an UPC format such as 719256706214 to a different format which looks like 7.19E+11 

It does not matter how many times I change it back, or save it or even try to protect it, once I save and reopen the file, it has changed back to the unwanted format.  I am saving this column of numbers as NUMBER with no decimal points.  Any suggestions on how to stop this from changing?

Hi,

The workaround is to preset the format of cells to Number or Text. Don't leave it in General.

Anyway, one of the top ideas in the Excel suggestions box asking to stop this change. You can vote for it.
