OneNote now supports interactive embed integration with PhET simulations and Coggle. It mind maps

As we continue listening to students and educators, we have heard many requests for OneNote integration with two popular apps

1) PhET - the popular interactive STEM simulations created by the University of Colorado Boulder

2) Coggle.it. - the clear way to share complex information, including mind mapping and flow charts

Educators and students around the world use these apps to create interactive learning resources and digital materials for their classroom, and now they can be embedded directly into OneNote!

Both the PhET team and OneNote teams have been hearing these integration requests more often.  The OneNote binder metaphor, and the ability to easily embed PhET or Coggle.it interactive pages in OneNote, organize them, or distribute to others in OneNote Class Notebook, seemed like a great match.

As of today, you can now paste any public PhET link or Coogle.it link on to a OneNote page and it will render it as a live interactive embed.  A great way to make learning more interactive.

To see some examples or how easy this is to do, see the example video of a PhET interactive simulation embedded and being used in OneNote.

Here is an example of a Coggle.it mindmap embedded in OneNote

We hope you enjoy this new integration to bring together two great apps that students and educators love!

Nice! I'm not user this feature, but it's really good to know that OneNote has remained more useful.

hey @Mike Tholfsen, this is really awesome. I used OneNote very frequently and i really loved this blog post. I probably use this in my some sessions. Thanks for sharing this informative post.

Love the idea. Coggle is working fine for me but I'm having problems with embedding the phet simulation. It justs comes up as a normal web link

Microsoft

What link are you using for the embed?  And what version of OneNote are you pasting into?

Copper Contributor

Hi @Mike Tholfsen I'm using the link in the browser when you are in the activity amd I'm using OneNote 2016. I have now tried about 10 different ones some now appear embedded and others don't. Most of the ones that appear embeded don't function. The only one i have found which functions is Farradays law. I think i need an avenger cape to get them to work:lol:

Two things:

1) For each of those links, can you first try pasting into Notepad, then copying paste in OneNote 2016

2) When is the last time you ran an update or installed patches for OneNote 2016?

3) Can you try the links in OneNote Online just to compare?

Copper Contributor

@Mike Tholfsen

1) no luck im afraid

2) I just checked my office is up to date

3) They all work on OneNote online  fantastically:smile:

This is nice, but I really don't get it -- why release a niche feature when simple code highlighting/style doesn't work yet? Please work on things that thousands of users will use every day!

Due to a recent Chrome browser issue, copying and pasting the URL directly from the address bar into OneNote Desktop will not automatically render the Genially. All other OneNote versions work fine (Windows 10, Online, Mac and iPad). Temporary work-around: after copying the PhET web address from your browser, use the right-click option Paste > Keep Text Only option in OneNote Desktop .  Pasting the URL from Edge, IE, Notepad, or other any other location works.

So blame Chrome :) They broke a bunch of partners around the world without any warning.  That said, we've pushed out a OneNote 2016 Desktopfix to adapt to the new Chrome behavior. It might be that you have not run this fix yet

@Mike Tholfsen This is wonderful news! I've been a user of both OneNote and PhET simulations. To be able to combine the two is amazing. Unfortunately there is one drawback: As soon as you navigate away from the OneNote page (to a different OneNote page), the simulation reverts to the start state. This causes it to lose a lot of its usability. If a teacher could set the simulation to a certain state (and keep it in that state) it would have been fantastic! Imagine the kind of interactive content you could create and then distribute it to all students. Now one would probably do it by embedding the simulation and then adding a screenshot of the setup one would like them to create.

Also, if students could create certain simulated setups and retain them - this could be the answer to an assignment. For example, I want students to build electrical circuits and I want to see that they have done it correctly. This is not possible at the moment. One will have to get the students to take a screenshot of what they have done to retain the state of the simulation.

It would be nice if you could build mind map functionality into OneNote - each page being a node, using subpages, sections and links as the links. It would make it exceptionally easy to navigate and see connections between ideas.

Guten Tag,

Mfg

@Mike Tholfsen The coggl integration no longer works on OneNote desktop. Coggl support says it is because OneNote still uses Internet Explorer and they no longer support it. Will you be updating OneNote to use Edge?

Microsoft

Yes, probably in late 2020
