Dev channel update to 78.0.249.1 is live

Microsoft

Hello insiders, we have a lot to share today!  In addition to releasing build 78.0.249.1 to the Microsoft Edge Dev Channel, we’re also very excited to announce that as of yesterday, we’re making the Beta channel available to download from https://www.microsoftedgeinsider.com!  The Beta Channel will see major updates every 6 weeks with periodic minor updates for bug fixes and security.  We intend for it to be our most stable insider channel, so it will have a lower version than the Dev and Canary channels and lack some of the features that those channels have.  To learn more, you can read our blog post here:  https://blogs.windows.com/blog/2019/08/20/introducing-microsoft-edge-beta-be-one-of-the-first-to-try...

To mark the occasion, we’re also proud to announce the availability of some long-awaited features.  First, Tracking Prevention is fully available in the Canary and Dev Channels!  For those who need a refresher, you can read our initial blog post announcing the feature here:  https://blogs.windows.com/msedgedev/2019/06/27/tracking-prevention-microsoft-edge-preview

Next, form fill and password syncing is fully available in the Canary and Dev Channels!  Those of you who are already signed into the browser with your Microsoft account should see the switches for both Passwords as well as Addresses, phone numbers, and more enabled on edge://settings/syncSetup.  And if you’ve got Microsoft Edge installed on your mobile device, form and password syncing will be coming there as well.

EDIT:  As of today, sign in and syncing is available for work and school accounts in all three channels!  Like syncing for personal accounts, there are certain types of items like history that aren't available to sync just yet but will be coming in the future.  To learn more, you can read our blog post here:  https://blogs.windows.com/msedgedev/2019/08/21/sign-in-sync-work-school-accounts-aad-websso.

Finally, we’re beginning to roll out Collections!  For right now, Collections is only available in the Canary Channel.  You can read our blog post here for information about how to try it out:  https://blogs.windows.com/msedgedev/2019/08/20/collections-now-available-microsoft-edge-preview

  • Fixed an issue where IE mode tabs sometimes don’t have their content sized properly when the tab first loads.

@Cherisam -- Before executing

msedge.exe --disable-features=RendererCodeIntegrity

Please run Windows Task Manager and kill any msedge.exe processes.

@Eric_Lawrence ok, it's running after i killed all the processes but i have to run the command every time i start it up

@Cherisam yes, any command line arguments only last for as long as the browser is open, so unfortunately you will have to either leave Edge open or run it with that command until we can get the issue resolved.

@Eric_Lawrence Alternate option for the plug in/extension rendering the browser useless issue is use Win8 Compatibility mode.

Hi,
I found that after upgrading to Dev 78.0.249.1, the "Desktop Only" input methods are disabled and cannot be used, while previous builds and Beta 77.0.235.9 are able to use. The new Edge should be a Desktop application so that I can use them. Please fix it and thanks a lot!

In addition, one more screenshot for your reference to compare the situation.

Just an update for this discussion but I figured out the issue with the DEV Build and it was definitely Symantec Endpoint Protection that caused the issue.

SEP - Before Update - 14.0 RU1 - Build 14.0.3752.1000

SEP - After Update - 14.2 RU1 MP1 - 14.2.4811.1100

This newer version has no issues with this DEV build of Edge and everything works as expected.

Added support for exiting full screen mode using the ESC key on Mac.

Your app have the special combination to exit a full screen Ctrl+Cmd+F. At the same time Esc have many other useful applications. Could you, please please please, add the way to disable it from exiting a full screen?

Actually it is the only reason I cannot switch to Safari on Mac - they have the very same problem with Esc.

You could just click the > icon on the favorites bar. Is that not good enough?

@dhuff46

No. The bar wastes Screenspace. Thats not acceptable at all

@Keith_Williams exactly the same issue here... can't figure it out....

Same for it, it fails catastrophically for me after the upgrade. I did an uninstall/reinstall, and it still fails. It also complains about my Lastpass and ABP extensions, which were even present after I reinstalled. I don't know if the extensions errors are a cause or a symptom.

The extension errors are a symptom. Every renderer process (including the renderer processes used by each of your extensions) is crashing because something is trying to inject code. Do you have Symantec installed? If so, you'll need to update to the latest version.

Dont know if its a controlled rollout but I just got the reading mode (and with the right icon, instead of a broken one like the favorites icon). Thanks

Scrolling with two fingers keeps triggering right click, using a hp envy x360 with default trackpad drivers.

Thanks for reading this:folded_hands::folded_hands:

Thumbs up.  Using on all my machines. Beta also fixed some issues on work domain that Dev suffered.

BUT I wanted to post a PDF related comment though.  I don't know all of the transaction process to talk intelligently about it, but the short story is certain sites result in a rendered pdf that cannot be saved as a pdf.   This isn't often a surprise as sites change policies and methods, but in this case the behavior is specific to how the site is handled by the Beta and Dev (tried both) as compared to the former Edge and other browsers.  To explain - I often pull down pdf's for work and home, but ran into an issue specifically with Citibank servers.  If someone on the dev team has a Citibank account, ask them to download a statement.  In the Beta and Dev browsers, attempts to save the rendered pdf result in an '.action' file.  In the former Edge, this isn't an issue where saving as a pdf (still) works fine.  Not being a mac user, I can only go on what I read, but it sounds like Citibank is interpreting the pdf as a Mac action/workflow file.  No matter the reason, there is at least one person that is hoping this behavior reverts.   [just to save some time - yes I am aware that I could print the rendering to a pdf instead.  ]

 @josh_bodner

@Chris Childerhose hmmm... i still have the same issue... question is, how do i upgrade the SEP version on a corporate build!

I was able to find the download online without having to go through the Management console. Find it here if you have version 14 - https://support.symantec.com/us/en/article.info5455.html

This lets you get the patch to update your client without the console being involved. :beaming_face_with_smiling_eyes:

"Fixed an issue where right clicking on some browser UI is instead treated as a left click."

I noticed that I can't right-click on context menu items anymore.

This actually breaks consistency, since right-clicking context menu items in Windows is possible.

For example, I can right-click on a folder and right-click on properties and it works.

Please consider reverting this change to stay consistent with Windows.
