Almost everything in Yammer has a unique URL. Finding and copy/pasting that URL helps you offer a direct link to what people may want to find in your network.

Offer a quick URL click-and-jump straight to:

- a file posted in Yammer,

- a user profile,

- a conversation thread (but not an individual post),

- a view of all posts with a Yammer topic applied,

- or, as I often do, straight to a Yammer group.

In all these cases, you can grab a URL right from the navigation bar of your browser. But here's an alternative specifically for your Yammer group name. It's different from the one you might grab from your browser.

This URL version reads more cleanly, for situations when you do need to display the URL. Also, in the past, this alternative URL has avoided the intermittent and frustrating errors around Yammer URLs not pasting cleanly into other Office 365 places. (If your pasted Yammer links in a Word doc are going awry, check for "%" errors popping up in your pasted result.)

To get the "pretty" URL, try this bit of algebra. Make some simple substitutions for your network name and the group name, and test it out.

https://www.yammer.com/networkname/groups/groupname

Note, if you use punctuation in your group names, play around a bit. Symbols can cause errors in some situations. For example, the "&" symbol in a group name will break your ability to email-post into a Yammer group, while a "+" seems fine. I avoid punctuation in group names just to stay on the safe side.

I hope that some of my techy friends will add the related tip here of how to "mention" a Yammer group, the way you'd mention an individual in a post. Paging Tom Kretzmer et al!

Yes x infinity for this, because the long, ungainly URL we get otherwise is just so not on at all.

Here's how to use [group:ID] to mention a group as an active link in a Yammer post*:

Step 1:

Look at the URL of the group you want to mention. Copy ONLY the ID number that comes at the end of this part of the string:

type=in_group&feedId=1234567

Step 2:

Start typing your post in the update box of the group of your choice. When it comes time to mention your group, such as a jolly "Join the Analytics group!"

--in place of "Analytics," you will instead use this formula: [group:ID].

Step 2a:

But wait! What you will actually type is this, with those brackets and that colon, and no spaces within, and pasting in that nice ID number you got in step 1:

"Join the [group:ActualIDNumberHere] group!"

Step 3:

Looks a little cringeworthy, doesn't it? But once you post it, it'll look like:

Join the Analytics group! <--we are pretending that the underline is an active link.

Step 4:

Do keep in mind to type in "group" after your group ID brackets, unless your group actually has the name "Group" in it already. Otherwise it'll look like Join the Analytics! which channels a 50s musical group, not that there's anything wrong with that.

*I am indebted to others for knowing this in the first place.

Thank you, Becky! I use these URLs regularly as I reply to people who've posted stuff in All Company rather than where that content could more properly be found and used. For example, I can type out the "pretty URL" for my network's Photography group and Inspirational Quotes group without even thinking.

So much better than those ugly URLs!  What if your group name has spaces?  I tried to escape them and it didn't work. Ideas?

Just omit the spaces... /groups/nameofmygroup

I will add... if you ever change the name of your group, these "pretty" URLs change, which has implications for any links you've hardcoded on your intranet. The IDs are permalinks.

Thanks, Chris!

Great summary of group URLs @Deleted! Here's a little workaround for getting past the %20 in the an URL when click from an Office documents.

Even if Explorer is already your default browser, go into the Control Panel and click Default Programs>Set your default programs>Internet Explorer>Set this program as default. Now, all of your links should translate correctly when in Microsoft Word and other Offce programs

Does anyone know how to get a direct link to the members list within a group?
