Does the new publishing (communication sites) support multilingual content? Something like the variations from the traditional SharePoint now?

We in the Netherlands also need the multi-lingual capability. A lot of our customers are working globally and need sites that support multiple languages.

This is a show-stopper for one of my clients as well. They are a global corp. with 1,500 employees. They are super excited about modern comunication sites but need some form of translation or multi-lingual capability. It would be a shame to build on classic SharePoint just for this one missing feature.

We in Switzerland have the same situation: four languages...
It's a blocker for us without multilanguage support.

This is a show-stopper for us too. We're likely to be legally obliged to translate all of our content very soon.

Same here in france, we have client with at least FR/En language needed for intranet. No seing the variation available for Communication Site is really a bad bad news

We could also do with this functionality for English/Welsh as its required to provide dual language systems etc.
I have opened a uservoice, to help drive priority, please support and maybe we can get more attention to this issue: https://sharepoint.uservoice.com/forums/329214-sites-and-collaboration/suggestions/20325751-multilin...

We currently face the same requirements with numerous customers. We cannot use Classic SharePoint today as the performance and the features gets slowly obsolete, but we still can't use variation mechanism which is not perfect, but we still can rely on it.
For tomorrow, we are looking for a more flexible way to render the information based upon the "source" language, and the available language tags which could be properties hosted in the Webparts or a page, and which only render based on user's preference language.
We also consider Flow as a great opportunity to transfer or link pages from one site to another, and provide the right technical architecture.
Thx in advance for your feedback.

This is definitely a killer feature, imagine the possibility to switch language on top of your communication site, with the content that reacts immediately.
This thing has a global impact because every international company needs to handle the multi-language.
Is it only in the backlog with no release date planned?

We need to provide content in English and Spanish - this would be a very important feature for us. Is there any news\movement on multilingual for Communication Sites?

This is really important for us, as well, in Michelin. We are trying to move our intranet to SharePoint Online, something I suppose Microsoft would like us to do. We are finding that very difficult without something like Variation Sites.
The translation isn't as big a problem as the URL management and synchronization between the "hives" of multi-language pages. Variation Sites were able to manage that part well...
As we are new to SharePoint, we have no reason to invest in classic SharePoint, but without this feature I've no clue how we can expect to continue.

More so than "translation" is the management of the URLs, redirects... the "hives" and templates of info. It is easy (relatively speaking) to build it the first time, but then keeping every language's pages updates and organized is the crusher.
We have people who can do translation.

Voted on the link you posted. Cant find the one i started.
The one you posted has got a lot of votes so that should cover it.
If you want to vote on something here is another voice. a bit off topic. (:
Dont know if it is only me but we have Dev/Demo O365 tenant's and need to start fresh from a SPO perspective every now and then. (:

We are facing the same problem. We're developing an intranet with SharePoint Online and we configured the variation capability for multi-lingual website. It works with the old pages but not with the new modern web site pages and we need some of the features in these.

@Bogdan Mocanu There's news regarding this topic: A brand new solution for multilingual content has been published by the PnP team as an open source project.
Not sure, if it can solve all issues/requirements, but it's definitely worth checking out:

@Bogdan Mocanu:For modern sites I understood from below blog posts that it is possible through the MUI interface if we need to keep all content on the same site (like typically for quality documents/work instructions). In this requirement we'd like to keep the content together, with a language property linked to it, and providing custom pages and views based on audience targeting. The remaining issue as i understand is then the search results, as those are not localised and need additional tweaking (see 2nd blog post I found): https://joannecklein.com/2018/10/05/multilingual-and-modern-sharepoint/
https://www.habaneroconsulting.com/stories/insights/2016/things-to-know-before-beginning-a-multiling.... I experimented with the machine translation of pages/text through flow but isn't a true option for communication sites as users expect correctly translated content. Autotranslate button webpart in SPfX framework is also an option in international context if usecase is to allow occasional visitors with different native language to understand what your site is about

Multilingual page publishing for Modern SharePoint showed up on the Microsoft 365 Roadmap: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/roadmap?filters=&searchterms=50217
Improvements are being made to have this feature out of the box!
05-02-2019 02:43 AM
@Yannick ReekmansGood to know that it is at last on the roadmap. I was wondering regarding another option for multilanguage on communication sites: the audience targetting for news pages was recently announced to start rollout in first release end april. How long would it take before it's also rolled out to all tenants? Or is that dependent on the type of functionality and always different?
05-02-2019 02:51 AM
@Sven De Cock No idea, I'm sorry. It seems to be different for each feature, although the tendency seems (based on personal experience and nothing more) to be lately to roll out in this order:
SharePoint team seems to move fast from one to three, so I'd say it will turn up very soon in non-targeted release tenants as well.
