are you connecting using Power Query (Get&Transform) or direct in Power Pivot?

Given that you are using Exel 2013, you have access to the PowerQuery addin, which will definately allow you to get the data you need. My advice is to create an ODBC connection within Windows, then use that connection to get your data via PowerQuery before doing whatever you want to do in PowerPivot.
Sources I've used successfully:
* SAP IQ
* MySQL
* POSTGRES
* MSSQL 2014 / 2016
