Advice: to save trouble - especially if it is a long time since you used DOS commands - when you are in the "command prompt" part, make sure that the new directory you create, into which you download the files from Microsoft, is in the root of C:\ - as in C:\FixStupidUpdates, for example? - it will save a lot of cd commands. And a final tip: it is not clearly stated, but the big download file is in fact a zip file, and once you have downloaded it to your new directory (C:\FixStupidUpdates in my example), click the .exe in order to unzip the files. You can do this from Windows Explorer - you do not need to be at a DOS [prompt for that job.
