Was this announced in the M365 or Azure Admin Message Center? There is also nothing about anonymizing usage data in the M365 Road Map, other than a reference to Teams usage anonymization in May 2021. Please share where this was announced or communicated prior to August 30th 2021 for a Sept. 1 2021 implementation. This change broke several reports in our environment that require user information to be in the report. We have reverted, but would have appreciated advanced communication. Thank you!

Thanks for your question.

The block will only affect Outlook. When Outlook communicates to the server it says, "I am Outlook and I am build XX.X.XXXXX.XXXXX," and the server can then check if the user is using an appropriate build.

We loved this in the Insider ring for Office, it was so popular we had a number of people asking to be included in the preview builds so they could use it... then it seems to have disappeared.

Please list the competitors you are thinking about as it be good to vet them against how Onenote 2021 performance once we can beta test it or it's released in a month or 2.

Could you update your comment with some reviews of the nearest good ones and what's lacking, a number seem to be missing features like OCR or handwriting support which Onenote has by default...

MS must decide; does it want OneNote to be 'All things to all people', or does it want it to be 'Razor-sharp focused in several key areas'? Both are doable, but with ultimate compromises that, if executed well, will ensure OneNote goes from interesting to, totally indispensable for even larger (& faster-growing) swathes of users.

Some excellent point made here by all, & especially by Bob;

MS will miss the boat if they don't listen, there are already several very intriguing upstarts. All of them are a long way from the full feature-set/utility of 1N, but most are designed in such a way, that they'll catch up sooner than MS assumes.

Their ear is more attuned to their different users & their use-cases, they've moved to cover some compelling niches/use-cases, & they don't pigeon-hole themselves into only supporting their products, so they can force even more $ or compliance from the user.

5ys+ from now, after shifting the deck chairs x times, OneNote could well be the crusty/undynamic option that's on its way out, compared to the other options around.

Very nicely stated as the OneNote versions are perceived differently depending on users and their personas.

OneNote is the one of the best products that Microsoft has ever built, even with its flaws. Deciding to improve the product by using the "OneNote 2016" platform was a great decision. Let's hope that they stay committed to the longevity of OneNote and not kill or mortally wound it in the process as they have done in the past with other Microsoft products. OneNote can be the product that makes using computers universally useful to everybody.

This forum is the key to making OneNote bulletproof. The forum is improving as issues are getting more attention and are answered by more monitors. In the past issues were acknowledged, but never actually closed. Users would suggest, question, or complain without having final solutions published. Publishing the solutions is crucial. Nobody likes to open an issue, have it praised by others and never know if it is being considered or fixed. There needs to be a begining and end to every issue.

From considering all the possible, exciting changes, honestly, I can't imagine them all coming, especially since how slow OneNote has evolved in recent times.

Why so many features bottled up for improvement? OneNote users have different (and sometimes multiple) personas. The different versions and platforms for OneNote now have seemed like design teams for each having different personas in mind. That's OK, though for right now, 2021 going on 2022. Why not aim to deliver something akin to web framework themes -- except easily switchable? These would collect option settings that correspond to diferent use personas. These could be, writer/blogger persona, feature designer, team meeting logger, and so on. Or at least survey users to cluster feature requests by how they use the product.

To take one example, why is it so much harder to work with images in 2016 than in other Office products? MS apparently focuses on taking notes rather than prepping articles: do your layout somewhere else, friend...

I hope we start to hear more than change is coming soon, given how much need has been bottled up--differentiated by use persona.

I worry this is the only time I'm likely to get visibility and then traction

I've tried to list it by urgency roughly, if we can move away from integrated/vertical system of using onedrive

Then people can ask for relevant feature as needed/I'll see how onenote 2021 is...

Why is there not a public feature request wiki for issues with onenote? Where anyone can vote on missing features

That way we can comment and see what's going to be added or not? Or then pay for certain features to be added?

This isn't an open source program, I can't go out and try to fix the issues I can see...
Can users write tickets to fix? Would microsoft make this program partly open source?

A couple of things come to mind:

Is Edge set as the default browser in both profiles/computers?

A long shot, but in order for Edge/IE11 mode to work with Outlook (the program) View-in-Browser. you have to make Edge the default handler for both .mht and .mhtml file types. Perhaps there are other file types in play on your two computers?

From my personal experience with Microsoft, it is best to make requests and suggestions, one at a time. That way a meaningful dialog can be created which can lead to actual solutions. I would expect that we will need to see what the first version of this combined OneNote looks like before making any further demands or suggestions.

Fortunately, it is pretty specifically mentioned that this is not a new app, rather the continuance of and the reinvestment in the existing desktop app. So that's good news for you and others who will be wondering, because that app does, and will continue to support offline notebooks. I'll never say never, but at this point, it would be like Word deciding to stop supporting local files.

Agreed, one universal app/desktop/ios/andriod should make things better. My point is there are lots of small changes that need to happen, mainly encryption, other cloud providers, export to open format/backups, free reader of onenote files (people without a paid copy) for my major ones
I just need a good note making system, as my post was lost?? I don't hold out hope that buying onenote 2021 will help me...

Cloud, can we choose other cloud options?
At present you can't use other cloud accounts, onedrive isn't encrypted but others are encrypted, if you need to keep the syncing using “cloud” storage
At present Local sync is only for 1 device

Office 2021, Can you use laptop hubs and or usb to usb, networks to share files over an existing network, sync to NAS, offline sync between mobiles and local computers?
I'm trying to see if you sync/silo notebooks to local to devices, share over workspace network/shared server and if you want publish to 'web' cloud...
One of the complaint with the onenote app was the lack of local storage for people like lawyers where they needed the privacy/not using onedrive...

Onedrive - this is currently unencypted
Has the new release added encryption at rest?
It's presently only account/password?
2 step verification, has this been added?

mobile devices, ios/andriod
onenote app, I understand you can encrypt it, how do I do this?

As an Enterprise Architect, it would be great to have the ability to import and export files between Whiteboard and Visio. The ability to take the content of a whiteboard session and have it convert to a Visio diagram would be amazing. Also, the ability to import a Visio drawing into the whiteboard space for other architects to collaborate with and make necessary modifications would be off the charts!

Am I just a hopeless Visio romantic about to get my heart broken, or is there Visio/Whiteboard love in the air? :)

Yes no luck here except I did notice that the problem does not occur on the ALL ITEMS view, so I created a new view by copying ALL ITEMS and called it Admin View New and that enables the user to enter data using the grid view and it saves the data correctly.

I am still struggling to find the fix. I have four documents library with the same columns, and I have an issue with two of them.
I have tried the below steps and still having the issue:

disable and enable quick view in library settings
Remove all the mandatory fields
Making sure the view is on default view

This exact same error has just appeared for our site today. I have tried it with a number of lists and it still fails. I have added an additional field and tried to edit other fields that are not person fields and it still will not let me enter data into the field in grid view. It works perfectly fine editing one record at a time.

See below. As soon as I enter data into the Office only column the red exclamation mark appears at the beginning of the row.

Have you found a solution?

Can anyone suggest a solution please?

Does anyone know why IE11 isn't reliably redirecting non-Teams apps to Edge? On my home PC, two Windows profiles, when I navigate to portal.office.com or other apps in IE11, one profile redirects to Edge, the other profile does not. The experience seems random.

Hello, I am a paid user of Office365 in China. There is a bug in OneNote2016 and previous versions. It has been a long time. Maybe you also know this bug. For example, if the default font is set to Microsoft Yahei, when inputting, if it is a Chinese character, then it is Microsoft Yahei, but after switching to English, it will automatically become Calibri, and Microsoft Yahei cannot be maintained. Because these two font sizes are not the same, it will cause the page to be very inconsistent. I really hope that this problem can be solved in a new version in the future, thank you.

This is absolutely ridiculous that I am unable to embed a Microsoft Stream video in a PowerPoint Live presentation whereas YouTube and Vimeo work just fine. I am logged into my Microsoft 365 account 100%. When presenting the PP, I am being asked to log in to MS Stream. Clicking on the link directs me to a blank page and nothing happens unless you keep staring at the white page and get a headache.

Trying to promote MS Stream as the chosen Streaming platform amongst staff and students is not being helped by this kind of issue.

I like this view a lot because I have total control of my computer and the attendees cannot see what I am doing. Otherwise if I share the PPT in a screen, it takes up both my monitors and I had to click back and forth to see the chat. Also couldn't do anything else on the computer without risking it being seen on the screen I was sharing.

What I would like to see/ask:

1) I show my PPT and then do live demo in our application. Then back to PPT, etc. It is easy to switch from the PPT to a Screen or Window share. however, when I want to go back to the PPT, I have to stop sharing and then select my PPT again in the Share Content menu. Is there a better way to do this?

2) When I do return to my PPT it does ask me if I want to resume where I left off. It actually jumps on the screen a second after it shows up. Then it is across the bottom of the ppt and not noticeable. It is very easy to accidentally click off of it and then it goes to beginning of the deck. Is there a way to make this a popup window in the center of the screen?

3) There is a pen, highlighter and eraser option but not a Zoom in feature like you get in PPT Presenter View. I see others have noticed no laser either.

4) Also we use Sharepoint to store our documents. When I go to pull them up in Teams PPT Live, it only pulls from my OneDrive. That is an issue because then I always have to save a copy to my One Drive in order to see any changes or updates anyone on my team may have made. Seems like it would be easy to find the document from SP since Teams, SP and OneDrive area all connected.

Hello - It was mentioned (here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/deployoffice/endofsupport/microsoft-365-services-connectivity )that Visio and Project are also affected by this change. How?What versions of those are affected? For MSI and click to run versions? Our more recent installs of Visio and Project are baked into the O365 office suite. But we do have older versions (e.g. project 2010/13) of these two apps that used the MSI based installer.

Hi, I have the same issue as dkrancer. We often record Teams Meetings and some we will play an animation that we have embedded into the PowerPoint. The animation does not play :(, no audio. Very disappointing as this could be really useful.

Yes :

Global administrators can revert this change for their tenant and view identifiable user information if their organization's privacy practices permit. 
This can be done in the Microsoft 365 admin center by going to Settings> Organization Settings> Services and selecting Reports. 
Under Choose how to display user information, deselect Display identifiable user information in reports.

There are different ways to organize the new tasks in the synced plan. For instance, I've created a process with the buckets (New messages, Reviewing, To be rolled out soon, Rolling out, In production, etc.) to track all the updates and to classify the services I use the labels/tags.

In this case of use it would be more useful if the connector's output could be an array with the synced messages with their corresponding task Id. That way the new tasks could be updated by the flow connector "Update a task V2 (preview)".

Bonjour,

Depuis que cette fonctionnalité a été activée, nous avons une série de chiffres et de lettres à la place des username.

Par contre, dans les paramètres de l'organisation > Rapports, l'option est bien cochée.

En décochant l'option "Show identifiable user information in reports", on retrouve bien les noms ou adresses mails dans les rapports.

Il y a soit un problème de traduction, soit un problème de fonctionnalité.

I can no longer sign-in to Microsoft Editor extension for Edge using my Microsoft Account. It works okay using Work or School account. No error, seems to signin, icon changes to blue then very soon goes back gray and is not signed in. happening only with Microsoft Account in Edge on both Windows and MacOS.

Any ideas or fixes?

At Microsoft, we’re committed to both data-driven insights and user privacy. As part of that commitment, we’re making a change to Microsoft 365 usage analytics on September 1st to pseudonymize user-level information by default. This change affects the following products and APIs, and will help companies support their local privacy laws:

Microsoft 365 Reports in the Microsoft 365 admin center
Microsoft 365 usage reports in Microsoft Graph
Microsoft Teams analytics and reporting in the Microsoft Teams admin center
The reportRoot: getSharePointSiteUsageDetail API (1.0 and beta) for SharePoint site detail

Global administrators can revert this change for their tenant and show identifiable user information if their organization’s privacy practices allow. This can be achieved in the Microsoft 365 admin center by going to Settings > Org Settings > Services and selecting Reports. Under Choose how to show user information, uncheck the statement In all reports, display de-identified names for users, groups, and sites, and then save your changes. Showing identifiable user information is a logged event in the Microsoft 365 compliance center audit log.

When user identification is enabled, administrative roles and the report reader role will be able to see identifiable user level information. Global reader and Usage Summary Reports Reader roles will not have access to identifiable user information, regardless of the setting chosen.

These changes to the product will bolster privacy for users while still enabling IT professionals to measure adoption trends, track license allocation and determine license renewal in Microsoft 365.

We are quickly approaching the November 1st deadline when the minimum version requirements for connecting Outlook for Windows to Office 365/Microsoft 365 services will change. So, we thought we’d share more information on why we’re doing that.

After November 1, 2021, only Outlook 2013 Service Pack 1 (with latest fixes) and later will be able to connect to Microsoft 365 services. It’s worth noting here that Outlook 2007, 2010, and Office 2013 versions earlier than 15.0.4971.1000 aren’t supported now, but we know some customers just can’t quit them.

The deadline is approaching!

Since our Message Center post last fall, we’ve seen a drop in the usage of the unsupported versions of Outlook for Windows – great job! If you’re still running older versions, please start working on a plan to move by November 1st.

Our Customer Support team is actively reaching out to tenants that have the most usage on Outlook 2007 and 2010 to help them meet the deadline. If you have questions or concerns about getting all users off these unsupported builds, please reach out to your support teams.

Why are we blocking old versions?

Older versions of Outlook such as Outlook 2007 and 2010 are incompatible with the following upcoming service changes, which is prompting this controlled block:

Support for basic authentication is ending to increase the security of Microsoft 365 by relying on modern authentication protocols, which are not only more secure, but also provide compliance and policy controls to help you manage your data.
We’re working on adding support for HTTP/2 in Microsoft 365. HTTP/2 is a full duplex protocol, which decreases latency through header compression and request multiplexing. On the service side, we’ll be able to better prioritize requests and more effectively push data to clients.

It can be a challenge to stay current, but there are many reasons why staying current is a good idea:

Security fixes will protect your devices against known vulnerabilities.
Reliability – over the last five years we’ve eliminated 75% of crashes in Outlook!
Updated versions have all the coolest new features to make your life easier!

Upgrade guidance

For Office 2007 and 2010, use the roadmaps listed below to move to Microsoft 365 Apps. If your organization is highly regulated or uses devices that can’t take updates, consider Office 2019

As a regular whiteboard user, one feature I seriously miss is option of having multiple scales on board. I work a lot with 0° and 90° angle. Every time I have to keep manually switching between the two and adjusting the angle to accurate which unnecessarily consumes time. I really wish this feature to be incorporated in upcoming releases.

As a developer using the COM API, when I fix a bug and re-deploy the DLL, I shutdown OneNote then restart it so that the new DLL version is loaded. When you close OneNote, the UI windows disappears, but the process continues to run in the background for several minutes. Presumably it is updating its cache. However even when I open OneNote and do not make a single keystroke change and close OneNote, it continues to run for several minutes in the background. Oftentimes, I lose my patience and kill the OneNote process in Task Manager; so that I can get on with retesting my changes; rather than twiddling my thumbs for several minutes waiting for process to terminate on its own.
So PLEASE, review & optimize the shutdown algorithm.

I would like to know how the queue for PowerPoint Live in Teams works. Where is Teams/PowerPoint Live pulling the data for the queue that auto-populates within Teams?

I support a recent event and the main issue during that event was quickly finding the files to share within that queue. Only recent and most open PowerPoint seems to appear and all new or rarely used PowerPoint could only be shared by clicking PowerPoint live and then selecting browse my computer.

How do you clear that queue?

Is there a cache to clear?

I am unable to find anything published online that answers these questions.

Maybe I was not precisly enough, sorry.

We have installed Office 365 Version 2008 and now we are installing via MEMCM ADR the Office 365 2102 Quality Update (Build 13801.20864).

After we see in Program and Feature the new installed Office version.

BUT there a no folder, icons, shortcuts (for example Word, Excel) in the "LEFT" side of the start menu. Looks like there is no Office installed.

On the right "pin" area the shortcuts are gone as well.

Right now we have this problems on all devices which we have tried, except that one who have installed the Office 365 2102 feature update (Build 13801.20808) (MEMCM, ADR) first a few weeks ago.

Also we can reproduce the issue on a test client (Windows 10 20h2 x64).

I have not seen this behavior with the 2102 feature update. It could be related to how the icons were originally pinned (e.g., something done in the OS image). If pinned shortcuts are important, consider pinning them via Group Policy.

We tried to update via quality update from 2008 to 2102 (ADR SCCM).

But now there a no Office shortcuts etc. in the startmenu anymore?

Microsoft Whiteboard didn't have Shapes. It was missing previously. Groups whiteboard partook in gatherings would have shapes and afterward those shapes would not be perceived when opened in the Microsoft Whiteboard application. A fundamental element like shapes is fundamental. Eased it has been amended. The wide range of various stuff is a reward. Love the layouts dependent on universally perceived practices everybody gets it.

in the context of Monthly Enterprise Channel, there will only ever be 1 Feature Update and 1 Extended Quality Update at any given time, and the titles will be unique between the two. That said, if you need to remain on the extended release of MEC then you would not want to push any updates with Feature Update in the title. This would keep you at N-1 from an update perspective.

The Extended Quality Updates are not a 1:1 of the previous Feature Update. They are a rev'd version of the previous Feature Update, including current quality and security updates. For example, the EQU for July and August 2021 included additional security updates, while the EQU for June 2021 included additional quality fixes and security updates.

If "Extended" updates are used, how is the release (in ConfigMgr) of future Office Feature Updates ensured if the word "Extended" does not even appear in the update title of the Feature Update, which is required by ADR according to Title Filtering in order for an update to end up in the SUG...?

Or will feature updates also be tagged "Extended" in the future (e.g., "Monthly Enterprise Channel Extended Feature Update")?

A while ago, I posted step by step instructions for adding a button to the ribbon to easily switch back to the old comments. I have been using the method for a couple of months now without problems.

Check back in the comments and you should find the instructions. Let me know if you can't find them.

Dear Microsoft,

why most of the time i try a new feature or a new app i find out more bugs than efficiency?

I could not find any information specifying which features are cross-platform. I find out that if I create an object on the whiteboard desktop client, on the Android client the object is not visible!

It's time to stop! This is all frustrating!

If you are upgrading an existing Windows 10 device to Windows 11, OneNote for Windows 10 will remain on the device. If you are installing Windows 11 as a clean installation or getting it as a new device, OneNote for Windows 10 is not installed by default. Many of these devices will have the OneNote app installed as part of the rest of Office. If you need OneNote for Windows 10, you can install it from the Microsoft Store app.

I think you misunderstood my point. I say that the name of the app has changed to OneNote instead of OneNote for Windows 10.

maybe go the route of getting a MS tech person on the phone? You'd have to pay... but it might be worth it if they end your misery (??)

Well - that was an interesting diversion? Should I start charging Microsoft by the hour? I went through the complete manual removal process, and then did a fresh install and STILL have the %££@@@!!! "modern" comments. Short of getting into a warm bath and opening a vein, I'm really not sure what to do! I'll have to live with it for the moment. If some kind soul has any thoughts I'd be grateful.

This just has to be something to do with insider programme participation leaving something on your system, as everything looks as it should on the surface. And it seems you are not the only afflicted user (though pre Modern Comments) unsuccessfully trying to extricate themselves from the (effects of being in the) insider programme.

Will Microsoft be able to comment on this new Edge feature/policy in Edge 93 that appears to keep View in File Explorer going beyond the end of support for IE/IE Mode, and how it is expected to work end to end, and for how long it may be supported? Configure the View in File Explorer feature for SharePoint pages in Microsoft Edge

Will the View in File Explorer menu item on the SharePoint ribbon bar light up, facilitated via an extension perhaps, or does this only enable the sharing of the needed persistent auth cookies, and Windows Explorer mappings to SharePoint document libraries will need to be created/maintained manually? Thanks!

First, I feel your pain. Here’s hoping I can help. I’ve gotten so much help here, paying it forward would be great!

All I did was make sure I changed my update option to automatic (I see you’ve done that). Then I shut the PC right down. Then restarted and Voila! Then I went straight to the updates and turned off auto update.

The only difference I see is in my build #, but did that change with the restart? And does it make a difference? 14228.20226
