Hey Carolyn, thanks for such a nice article. I have one question. Is it possible to configure Modern authentication using any external IDP or federation server sitting on premise without using Azure AD(Cloud). We have vendors like Ping, IBM which supports federation server+MFA capability and client looking for only on Premise solution. Would be great if you can share your thoughts on this please.

Found this thread yesterday and it has been a fascinating read. We have Poly VVX 411s and migrated from SfB to Teams in Jan. this year. All users are now Teams only. Our IT staff have all migrated to headsets working with the Teams desktop client. We'd like to move all users that direction but will always have some users that "require" a handset. As new phones are needed we've moved to CCX 400/500/600s but we can't replace 1600 VVX 411s at once. About 2 weeks ago, some 411 users reported they could no longer add a 3rd user to an ongoing call. I've tested and when using the 411, adding another caller shows "Connecting to Conference" followed by "The conference service is unresponsive. Try again later." Tapping Meet Now on the 411 has the same result. Is this expected behavior for a 3PIP phone or do we have something misconfigured with our Skype to Teams interop? Looking at Interoperability of Teams and SfB, is this what is meant here?

Escalating an ongoing peer-to-peer voice or video call to a multiple-party call involving both Teams and Skype for Business users isn't supported.

Our 411s are on FW 6.3.0.14929 and paired with the user's device using BToE 4.3.

Thanks in advance. Many of the issues and solutions discussed in this thread mimic what we've experienced since moving to Teams.

I searched further on it:

If I disable ICE on the VVX201 phone, (tcpIpApp.ice.mode="Disabled") the call termination issue is gone.

Just so everyone who stumbles upon this topic knows, after a month and a half of pestering the MS O365 support, I've received a final confirmation apparently coming from <LI-USER uid="63915"></LI-USER> and <LI-USER uid="223388"></LI-USER> that 3PIP phones interoperability features not listed explicitly in this blog post are not supported in terms of bug fixes.

Consequently, Call Queues with Direct routing with 3PIP phones are officially not supported and no fix will be provided for the call termination issue.

Hi,

I am a student and I do not have Skype or use Skype for Business. I am experiencing the same problem as listed in another post that says 18 others have the same problem! ( linked here: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/skype/forum/all/how-to-uninstall-completely-skype-for-business/6421570a-77de-456a-be64-8d9e270bc502)

A response to that post was to ask the forum here.

Basically, I want to remove Skype for Business completely, but I do not have the standalone version so I do not want to delete all the office apps. (It does not show in the list of programs to uninstall.)

The frustrating thing is that it keeps popping up every time I turn on my PC, and I already unticked all the boxes related (automatically opening after opening Windows).

Any solutions? A response is very much appreciated.

Thank you,

L.Zhao (she/her)

<LI-USER uid="72971"></LI-USER> In my experience though, MS support doesn't want to scroll up the thread and just says that 3PIP support has "some functionality limitations" which apparently includes Call Queues with Direct Routing. I guess it would be much easier if Call Queues were explicitly listed in the top post.

Another thing I want to mention is that there is a peculiarity with SfB phone certification. We've got Yealink T48G/S phones, which are Skype for business certified phones. Or, as it turns out, they WERE when we bought them.

Check this out:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/skypeforbusiness/certification/devices-ip-phones - no Yealink T4x phones, only newer T5x that are Teams compatible.

http://web.archive.org/web/20190329220750/https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/skypeforbusiness/certification/devices-ip-phones - there they are, along with some older Audiocodes devices & others. This is the same article in March 2019.

As one would expect,, MS support links the current article and says "your phones are not supported".

All of this, IMO, completely contradicts that whole idea that "you can just upgrade to Teams and continue using your 3PIP phones you've made an investment in never knowing that SfB is being retired so suddenly".

Yes, we have been using it for at least a year with no issues at our company and also several of our clients. We have direct routing with Polycom VVX phones. Microsoft supports it. You will need to scroll up in this thread to see it.

<LI-USER uid="817625"></LI-USER> Yes, they work now. There was an issue, but it has been resolved for quite a while. The 3PIP phones do not support conference mode in the call queues, though, which is the resolution for the 5 second call pickup delay.

As soon as I say that we've got SfB phones, I'm told that the supported phones are Teams phones and we should upgrade to that. Then it takes weeks of correspondence to move past this.

So anyone considering using 3PIP phones with Teams beware of the horrendous support delays if you have any issues. Which you probably will.

<LI-USER uid="63915"></LI-USER> , is this feature list still up to date? We noticed call queues do work on most S4B devices now in a full Teams-Only environment. We have a very specific problem with our Polycom VVX201, but Poly doesn't want to help as they refer to this 2-years old post about call queues not supported on 3PIP. I think, now the 3PIP has been announced to be supported up to 2023, basic things like a call queue should work no? Thanks for your update.

I had endless discussions with Microsoft Engineering team on this topic and the reason for many features not supported with 3PIP phones are due to complete change in design.

Some of the features not supported with 3PIP which I am aware of are:

1.) Call forwarding

2.) Setting presence

3.) Some new features doesn't work

4.) DND (calls will still land on 3PIP)

Some settings which didn't work for me are listed below.

Call forwarding, delegate, Voicemail settings are not migrated.

Some interop cases failed when we have coexistence mode.

<LI-USER uid="80266"></LI-USER> given I'm a Teams voice specialist, doubtful I'll be moving to another platform :)

I would also want to wait and see if Microsoft's recent announcements around additional SIP device support coming next year will solve issues like this. Given the phones would be registering using standard SIP mode rather than SfB\3PIP, I'm hopeful but will refrain from speculating until the feature lands and can put it through its paces.

<LI-USER uid="62969"></LI-USER> this feature really solves the call delay but has few pre-requisites which will not be supported with 3PIP phones. similarly presence based routing and longest idle are also not supported with 3PIP phones.

MS document:

Conference mode significantly reduces the amount of time it takes for a caller to be connected to an agent, after the agent accepts the call. For conference mode to work, agents in the call queue must use one of the following clients:

The latest version of the Microsoft Teams desktop client, Android app, or iOS app
Microsoft Teams phone version 1449/1.0.94.2020051601 or later

We were waiting months for this feature to land, before which Teams users would experience a 5-7 second delay between answering a Call Queue call and media establishment.

If the call drop at 30 second issue is indeed due to VVX phones not supporting Conference Mode, that doesn’t really help. It’s a catch 22.

Can you check if you have enabled "Conference mode" and "Presence-based routing" these are not supported with 3PIP phones.

I tested with Polycom and AudioCodes devices are they work for the scenario which you mentioned.

Exchange integration diagnostic will be included in next major release (work is currently in progress and expected to be released in less than one month).

Hi <LI-USER uid="184627"></LI-USER>,

You are not alone. I have experienced this exact issue, with traces showing that the SIP BYE message was coming from the VVX handset, tearing down the call. This was on a range of VVX handsets, not just 201s (as expected, running same code on all).

Given the multitude of issues VVX phones have experienced since Teams support was first announced, I didn't bother opening a case\investigating further. You only have to read back through this thread to get a feel for multitude of issues and lack of clarity as to what's actually supported, and as you have experienced opening a case rarely leads to a solution.

Instead, two possible workarounds that I came up with\tested successfully:

Create a dummy user, give it an internal extension and setup a Call Group that has the same members as the Call Queue. Use a dial plan to manipulate internal calls to actual Call Queue number to this new extension if end users are unlikely to remember\dial a new number

Use dial plan to route calls to this number to a dummy number that routes out towards your SBC(s). Pick the call up here and manipulate\re-route back to Call Queue. Not pretty but it works

Hope this helps

Hi,

We have following issue: call is disconnected after exactly 30 seconds when a call queue with a Teams-Only agent is called by a Teams-Only user who uses a VVX 201 phone.

So I repeat: ONLY happens when following conditions met:

-Polycom VVX 201 phone (we only have 201 phones, so I cannot tell if it is model-related)

-Teams-Only user logged on the the VVX phone

-Teams-Only user member of call queue

user 1 calls to the call queue using the VVX phone. Teams-Only user 2 picks up in the call que -> call drops after excactly 30 seconds from point of view teams-only user 2.

If the caller is on island mode, everything works fine. No direct routing is involved because we don't see any SIP traffic on our SBC. So everything is handled withing Microsoft Network.

I already opened a case with Polycom. They say call queues with Teams-Only users are NOT supported on S4B-phones -> case closed.

Does anyone experience the same issue?

I also created an MSFT ticket: #‎22458205

<LI-USER uid="822132"></LI-USER> Just that the provisioning portal at https://aka.ms/skypecap seems to randomly stop working. You can search for the CAP user account and put in the activation code from the phone's screen but you just get an error saying "Provisioning failed". We've given up on it and are just setting a password on the CAP account and signing in to the phone with it.

The previous time it stopped working, I opened a support ticket, which got routed to the "Asia Pacific" support team. When they called at 12:30am, I didn't answer for some reason. Eventually I got told "It's a problem with your phone", and then when I proved it wasn't a problem with the phone, they asked me to gather a Wireshark trace. For an issue that was obviously on their server. Eventually it started working again... three weeks later.

I could open another support ticket I suppose, but I don't think it would be a productive use of my time.

Yet another issue discovered with 3PIP phones today:

If there is no direct network connectivity between the desk phone and any Teams client (desktop, mobile), the call audio does not connect and the call is dropped after a few seconds. If the Skype for business client is used instead of Teams with the same user (on the remote, non-desk phone side), the call works just fine.

Changing Teams upgrade modes (Teams-only, SfB-only, Islands) for both parties has no effect.

I'm not sure if this worked for us before, could be an outage.

Still working through L1 support on the ticket regarding Call Queue issue.

Definitely did not expect that 3PIP phone support is still so flaky, since it's been almost 2 years since this blog post.

We are testing out the VVX with Direct routing and finding that dynamic emergency location information for 911 is not being passed. It is passed for the Teams client, teams app and CCX, but not the VVX. Is this supported?

Is it possible to disable TLS 1.0/1.1 on the SfB 2015 servers in a coexistence environment with Lync 2013 and SfB 2015? I realize that you cannot disable it on the Lync 2013 servers but the article makes it sound like you cannot disable in the SfB 2015 environment either if you have a 2013/2015 mix.

Since Lync 2013 now supports TLS 1.2 I would think that you can disable TLS 1.0/1.1 on the SfB servers and keep it enabled on the Lync 2013 servers.

Has anybody experienced the issue with Call Queue calls not disconnecting on 3PIP phones if they are hung up from the Direct Routing PSTN side?

I've checked SIP logs from a desk phone, and there's no BYE packet coming from the gateway. I can see the BYE sent by the Direct Routing SBC to the Teams side, but looks like it's then lost somewhere along the complicated way through the 3PIP gateway.

On a desktop client the Call Queue calls are terminated correctly. Anybody else seeing this?

The Next Version of Skype for Business Server

This week, at Ignite, we announced that the next version of Skype for Business (SfB) Server will be available in the second half of 2021, and will only be available with the purchase of a subscription license. Subscription entitles access to support, product updates, bug and security fixes. We will share additional details around the official name, pricing and availability, later.

The next version of SfB Server will support in-place upgrade from SfB Server 2019 for a period of approximately two years following release. This feature will allow the admin to easily upgrade existing servers running SfB Server 2019 to the subscription-based codebase without needing to add or change servers.

The next version of SfB Server will continue to support side-by-side deployment and migration from earlier versions of SfB, as has been the case over the last few releases, but we have increased the number of versions it can be installed alongside. Customers with Lync Server 2013, SfB Server 2015 or SfB Server 2019 can install the next version of SfB Server into their existing organization.

We highly recommended that customers with existing Lync Server 2013 or SfB Server 2015 deployments and who expect to keep on-premises servers in the future, should start planning and installing SfB Server 2019 today. Once the next version of SfB is released, they will then be able to perform an in-place upgrade to that version, making the move to SfB Server 2019 the last major upgrade they will ever need to do.

We will have more details on this change over the coming months.

Although you can’t do it in the Teams app, you can do it on a VVX phone:

Settings->Features->Line Key Customization
Enable

Then under Phone Line Keys you can search the SFB directory and make assignments.

This is an acceptable solution to me since it still provides presence status.

<LI-USER uid="63915"></LI-USER> or <LI-USER uid="223388"></LI-USER> can you tell us if this capability will remain after SfB Online is retired next year? It works without any issues when they use their personal mobile and laptop with the same login user@abc.com

I made sure that domain xyz.com is not under the blocked domain list by login to the skype admin portal.

I'm new to skype admin but not sure how to move forward.

Request your help from skype admin experts who may have come across it and any clue what is going on?

Request your help at the earliest since its prod and escalated.

Thank you for your help in advance.

N.K.Samy

<LI-USER uid="780292"></LI-USER> There is no separate UI for Skype for Business phones interop-ing with Teams. It hits a gateway that we have running in the backend. The UI should not be different from what you have on the Skype for Business interface. Your phone will be a standalone device (not interacting with PC) with basic calling and meeting capabilities. We are not planning on adding any new features to the gateway.

As Ilya has mentioned above, for better together and other advanced user scenarios, our recommendation is to use Teams phones.

<LI-USER uid="780292"></LI-USER> I'm adding <LI-USER uid="63915"></LI-USER> who is on point for Teams Phones.

Some quick answers to your questions though:
- Your YL T-48S phones are not native Teams phones. They work with Teams only through a gateway we operate. That GW will continue to work until June 2023. After that, the phone can be reflashed to Open SIP FW and will operate via a SIP gateway we announced is coming for Teams. They will work as "standalone" with Teams as you say, but their experience will be more limited than full native Teams phones

- We will not have BToE or equivalent support for non-native phones working through a gateway

- We do have BToE equivalent functionality, which we now simply call "Better Together", for true native Teams Phones

- you can find native Teams phones here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/microsoft-teams/across-devices/devices/category?devicetype=34

Hope this helps, and Kruthika can add more color as needed.
- your

<LI-USER uid="223388"></LI-USER> I have waded through this whole thread, and still have some questions. We converted to a hosted Skype for Business environment almost 2 years ago. We went with Yealink T-48S phones, about 400 of them. Our calling needs are fairly simple, need to be able to call a group of phones using a single number, like for our IT department. I think they all ring at the same time, is that a queue or simultaneous ring? I'm not sure. I love BToE, when it works. But most, probably don't actually use it. But using the phone as a speaker and mic for the computer has been awesome.

In my current use case, I have both SFB and Teams installed on my PC with BToE (Our tenant is in islands mode) . When I can use calling in Teams, the phone basically acts as a speaker and mic, and obviously the Skype functionality works well (most of the time). If we were to go to a Teams phone system (keeping the Yealink T-48S phones), what experience would I be left with?

WIll BToE or some equivalent still work? Will the phone at least work as speaker and mic? Can I dial a number on the PC and pic it up on the phone? Can I still ring multiple phones with one number? About half my phones are stand alone, will their experience be better/worse on Teams? I could choke on purchasing new back office phones, that would be about 100 of them, but could I keep the T-48s as viable standalone devices? I just can't find anything about the full experience of running a SfB phone on a Teams system.

I read the announcement about support next year, but it seems that won't affect my scenario at all, is that correct? I'm hoping for a roadmap forward, but it is just so confusing.

Feature: Multi factor authentication

New scenario: Exchange integration is not working

New scenario: Presence subscription and IM delays (Performance)

New scenario: Modern authentication not working

New scenario: Skype for Business Server Deployment Best Practices Analyzer

Thanks to Mike McIntyre for great contribution to this new release.

<LI-USER uid="223388"></LI-USER> There is one remark. VVX Phones in Russian market are not working with SfB Online / Teams properly.
It's not possible to make P2P calls from/to VVX Phones purchased in Russia because they are not supporting SRTP from factory (at least that's what Polycom says in their community posts, i.e. LINK ). To be honest I didn't find the exact legal note for that.

And so far we don't have any workaround for this as it's not possible to enable SRTP on the phone.

It has impacted timeline of migration and budgeting for some locations in Russia where VVX Phones were considered as a temporary Common Area Phone solution. So they have to be replaced with native Teams Phones i.e. Yealink.

This is something that should be counted in mind when you're migrating Russian market to Teams telephony and want to use VVX temporary.

Also interesting how this legal requirement affects Teams Phones usage in Russia i.e. Polycom CCX and Yealink T5*

The functionality in the future for SIP phones will be, at best, equivalent to the functionality of 3PIP phones today when working with Teams. So the VVX phones work with Teams now, and they won't be gaining any more functionality in the future.

<LI-USER uid="17488"></LI-USER> That is great news. It will be interesting to see how they will implement the core calling features with SIP phones. At least it gives us hope that all is not lost in our investment in the VVX phones we were required to purchase to replace our old CX phones that needed to be retired due to security limitations.

I have been a part of this thread for years and always use <LI-USER uid="63915"></LI-USER> summary list at the top to inform clients what functionality they do/dont get if they choose to use 3PIP / SfB phones. Yesterday's announcement regarding extended support timeline for 3PIP phones -AND- Teams Support for SIP phones (mind blown!) is below FYI:

"We also realize that being able to use existing hardware can provide important cost savings when moving to a new phone system. Today, we are announcing extended support for Skype for Business (3PIP) phones beyond 2023, so you can continue to use your existing Skype for Business phones as you move to Teams. Additionally, we will be supporting core calling features on SIP phones from Cisco, Yealink, Polycom, and others with Teams. Support for SIP phones will be available in the first half of 2021." https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/blog/2020/08/03/take-communnext-level-microsoft-teams/

Thanks <LI-USER uid="748905"></LI-USER>. I also used the workaround of using web sign-in but I also opened a support case. It was—predictably—an exercise in frustration, but the issue on Microsoft's backend did get resolved sometime on or before June 30. That being said, I haven't had to activate another CAP since then, so it's entirely possible it is broken again.

<LI-USER uid="96287"></LI-USER>, we aren't enforcing MFA yet, but this is good to know, thanks!

Hi Team,

We recently upgraded from Lync 2013 to Skype for Business 2019 Server CU3.

We have a requirement to redirect calls that are unanswered back to reception after 15 seconds.

Previously, I used SEFAUtil in a powershell script to achieve this, so I was excited to try the new SEFAUtil commands in Powershell.

Unfortunately, I discovered a bug using the -UnansweredToOther switch in the "Set-CsUserCallForwardingSettings" command.

It appears to work (the output looks correct) but when testing it doesn't recognize the setting and rings out.

It works if I manually make this setting on the Skype for Business client which is not feasible with 600+ users.

This same bug is highlighted in this link - https://www.myteamslab.com/2019/08/skype-for-business-2019-call-forward.html

Are there any plans to fix this bug in the next CU?

Although I changed BackgroundColor and ForegroundColor and other options from properties, I didn't succeed in changing It from scripts. The changes from scripts go to disappear sometimes.

And another question :

Is there an option to pin Powershell Above the rest?

<LI-USER uid="338325"></LI-USER> Yes, we just received some CCX 400s and performed some testing. They do appear to work fine and the syslog call ladder looks similar to the soft client (headsets - which also works fine).
