I need an answer to a pretty much tough question - have you guys given up Whiteboard? This article is from september 2019 and not much has happened with Whiteboard since. I am asking because we are considering moving to Whiteboard for UX and facilitation. It really looks like a promising MVP, but without further development it doesn't come near to being useful - you can't even create your own templates and lay out, say a whole design sprint up front. It's a massive limitation. On the other hand if this improvement is on the way it might be the reason for us to adopt Whiteboard...

the updates to support WinINET were released for SAEC Version 2008 (Build 13127.21064) released on Jan 12. This functionality is available to clients in all update channels if their version is > 13127.21064.

My question is may be slightly offtop but it concerns to updates channels. We are using Intune as MDM and want to setup Configuration profile with Monthly Enterprise update channel. But I can't see MEC in the list of the 'Channel Name' setting:

As we can see the channels' names are also old.

Is it possible some how update this list? I've tried to search about this but didn't find anything useful.

Another issue I would like to highlight is the text tool , we cannot drag this text box to where we want to add the text, also we do not have the Fonts and sizes to increase or decrease the size of change the fonts. Can you please incorporate these features?

I am trying to create my own Design Thinking Templates in MS Whiteboard, I am able to create the templates but those I only can use not able to save them as a separate template.

Can you please make this possible that the user is able to create templates as per their needs and save them in the template library for their local profile? But hey can be used by stakeholders in the organization. I mean a reusable template.

Also one this template is good a user can submit to MS then MS can consider to make this as a global template that can be used by all users of MS Whiteboard?

This is not fixed in 2103 either. To over come this issue we deployed new on premise DPs and staged only O365 Updates to it, no other content is staged to these on prem DPs. We removed the O365 Updates from CMG. We added the new on prem DPs to the VPN Boundary group. This way for O365 Updates the on prem DP is used, for all other content the CMG is used. We recognize that due to this configuration our clients will come over the VPN link to our on prem DP to download the O365 updates but that is a compromise we had to make as CMG would still not support O365 CDN content.

The fix for this was not included in 2002 as originally expected and is still under development. We expect technical preview in coming weeks available for testing. "

We are currently in process of deploying the on prem DPs. We are getting new servers provisioned to do this. What we had tested in our lower environments was so, we simply didnt select any option for fallback to neighbour or default boundary group. We also didnt select the option to go to Microsoft updates when content is not found on local DPs. We are allowing the client to look at CMG, where the content is not staged. By default the client will look to the next set of DPs in the BG which will be on prem and will get content from the on prem DPs. This has worked in our lower environments.

The reason to now allow clients to go to Microsoft updates is the fact that we will not be able to control the time when the updates are downloaded and also we do not want to consume our VPN Bandwidth with the download of this update content over the internet while connected to VPN. We are not able to split tunnel based on FQDN due to limitations on our VPN infrastructure.

Open question:
"The BG would be setup to prefer cloud distribution points. When the clients do not find the content on the CMG they will move on looking for the content on the next set of DPs as per the content lookup request based on the boundary group."
If the boundary group is configure to "prefer cloud based sources over on-premises sources", the client should get it directly from Cloud DP or Microsoft.

How did you configure the Office update?
If in the deployment download settings you check the option "if software updates are not available on distribution point in current, neighbor or site boundary groups, download content from Microsoft Updates", and you do not synch the update content with the cloud DPs then the client should fallback to Microsoft to get the content.
Did you try that option?

This is incorrect. O365 Updates are not supported over CMG\Cloud Distribution points as per the limitations listed here and from our own internal testing as well:

Thank you! We are planning to setup some On Prem DPs which we will add to our boundary group for our VPN clients. These new DPs will have no other content except the O365 updates on them. I learned yesterday the *workaround*, initially released for COVID support, has been deprecated mentioned above. Therefore, customers who use forced tunnel VPN must whitelist by FQDN the URLs as specified on the Office IP and URL page. This option was dropped primarily due to lack of use by other customers.

I'm no longer on the Office team at Microsoft but I do know there was a message center post at the start of COVID (I don't have the specific reference available) which directed customers in your situation to contact your Microsoft Account Manager (TAM or CSAM) and open a support ticket as a workaround does exist, not public. (Microsoft recommends split tunnel by FQDN where possible). As you stated, if IP is the only way for your customer, MS Support can share instructions to permit this as an exception. If the MS Support person isn't familiar direct them to contact me and I can point them in right direction to help you. The one caveat is the workaround only works when using default update from CDN scenario. You cannot use Configuration Manager to deliver updates for Office 365 Client and restrict updates to subset of IPs. Of course, Configuration Manager will continue to provide compliance information, just not be involved in pushing updates. In short, the answer is option #1 above + Workaround provided by MS Support. (where IPs are shared for your VPN exceptions)

I have been scouring through blogs and documentation but I am not able to find IP Ranges for officecdn to use for Office 365 Updates. We unfortunately have a limitation where we need to split tunnel using only IP addresses and not FQDN for our Office 365 Updates to use public internet for clients connected over VPN. Our original plan was to use CMG to deploy the updates but turns out Office 365 Updates (CDN content) are not supported over CMG\cloud Distribution points. The only alternative is to allow our clients to download the updates over the internet but in order to do that we need the IP ranges for the office CDN. We have been discussing creating an installation package for the update that we would then deploy through the CMG but the package would have a very complex logic for X86 or X64, with or without Visio\Project etc. Hoping you can point me in the right direction to find the IP ranges for the officecdn for updates.

I use Mac because I dislike Microsoft, but am forced to use Microsoft 365 because others do. Now you have changed the save default forcing me to use One Drive, which I do not want to use and I cannot find a good way to save to iCloud or my computer. One more forced attempt for Microsoft and Apple to disengage. I don't have time to convert One Drive to iCloud--nor do I want to. I will look for other means tor my work documents that is user friendly and less proprietary. Shame, Microsoft for making my life more complicated and controlled.

If what and says is true, the auto renewal feature creates an endless loop that will result in no (or very few) groups being deleted.

It only makes sense if a group CANNOT be auto-renewed after the first notification is sent out.

, please respond. Is this behaviour the way it works? And if so, will you consider changing that behaviour?

I'm having compatibility issue with MS Project Professional 2016 (Semi-Annual Enterprise version 2008) connecting to SharePoint Project Server 2013.

The same MS Project Project Professional 2016 (version 1908 version) working fine without any issue but unfortunately, the Microsoft support has ended last week and we have updated the MS Proj Profession 2016 to version 2008 but now we are facing compatibility issues and not able to open SharePoint Server 2013.

I do not see any posts in msdn regarding the compatibility of MPP 2016 new versions to Server 2013.

Can someone help me in getting the solution.

Just to add to the above, reducing the limit for Multi Geo to 250 just further proves that this is a solution for Midsize aswell as Enterprise customers and the product offering should be included under CSP. Whilst it’s great to support existing EA customers, doesn’t this just send mixed messages to channel?
Not to mention enabling CSP/MSP resellers to service these customers from end to end gives the customer greater choice and better value.
A customer with 250 seats would certainly receive a more proactive service under the CSP channel over LSP.

I am one of the "lucky" ones who can access the preview app but to say I am disappointed is an understatement. All that has been done is embedding Edge Chromium in the "app" and launching the web page full screen. Other than full screen it provides from what I can tell any improvement to user experience or capability. This is a mile away from the iOS app.

We are currently working on providing access to our Android app to all Microsoft Account users (regardless of the fact whether they have a work or school account). That is why the Android app specifically carries a "Preview" label as of now . So, stay tuned for more updates.

You can download the Whiteboard "Preview" App from the Google Play app store (Link: Microsoft Whiteboard - Apps on Google Play). However, kindly bear in mind that the app can only be accessed using a work or school account as of now but we are actively working to make it available for all Microsoft account users.

We, Surface users, have access to MS Whiteboard from our computers. Why is the access to the Android and Web apps restricted for us?

Seriously, there is not even a way we can pay to access it...

We've been allowed to taste an amazing product from our Surfaces, and now are suffering the frustration of not being able to use it (or to access the boards) from anywhere else.

Please fix this as a matter of urgency.

Echoing the above comment re: Planner activity not triggering auto-renewal. We've also encountered this, where a user created a Planner instance and that was the only portion of the group that was in use. They had to manually renew the group, as the Planner activity did not trigger auto-renewal.

Sure thing, I suspect the Office 2019 code was never enlightened to understand what MEC channel assignment means, therefore leaving client in orphaned state. I've shared this with Office PG for consideration, thanks for the comment.

I know about "PerpetualVL2019" update channel for Office 2019. But I thought we can set Update Channel in GPO for O365 and Office 2019 will ignore this setting. But this is wrong. It breaks the Update function.

As workaround we will set the registry key by a script if needed sometimes: "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\office\16.0\common\officeupdate" updatebranch = MonthlyEnterprise

I was lookin for hours for a solution. Thanks for clarifying this.

Based on the documentation this is by design. "PerpetualVL2019" is the only supported update channel for Office Professional Plus 2019 and Office Standard 2019." However, I agree with you. The Office 2019 clients would benefit from a feature to "ignore" GPOs for channel assignment which are out of scope, unless combined with GPO "Upgrade Office 2019 to Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise" would be a better as to minimize your IT overhead. I've rolled off the Office team last year but will share this sentiment with the Office team.

Problem/Question with Update Channel in GPO for O365 and Office 2019

We have a mixed deployment with Office 365 and Office 2019 clients. In GPO we configured the Update Channel setting to "Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel".

This works fine for the O365 clients. But it breaks the update function for Office 2019. They never install any updates. After manually click on "Update Now" button, it says "You're up to date" and shows an older build nr. which doesn't include the current security- and bugfixes.

After changing the "Update Channel" setting in GPO to "Not configured" it works fine on the Office 2019 installations. I was able to update them without a problem.

But I don't understand why this is not working with "Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel"? The O365 installations has configured this setting additionally in configuration.xml which is used during installation, therefore we don't have to set this in GPO. But if we would change it later eg to "Monthly Enterprise Channel" we can not do this anymore by GPO because it breaks the Office 2019 installations.

Do someone has an idea how to manage this Channel settings by GPO for both Office versions?

The servicing profile will manage ongoing updates after the devices has been provisioned though AutoPilot. The one thing to note - you should not enable compliance checks it can inadvertently change the configuration on the Office apps for the devices being managed by servicing profiles. Are there any issues with corporate devices managed by Intune that have gone through Autopilot? For instance, M365 Apps for Enterprise installed with Monthly Enterprise Channel. Will the Servicing Profile then take over and keep enforcing the Monthly Enterprise Channel but then start enforcing exclusion dates and update deadlines?

Guests of a Teams channel can view a whiteboard in the meeting, but only if they switch to their guest account inside the Teams client. We're aware this is a limitation and we're working on bringing more support for external users to Whiteboard.

shared whiteboards will remain available but any private/unshared whiteboards will be deleted. We recommend that as part of someone leaving the company, you run our PSH cmdlets to transfer ownership of their boards to another person, such as their manager. Still waiting for the Android (the world’s biggest mobile OS platform) version. I saw it was promised as part of the roadmap for 2020, though I can't find it on the current roadmap.

Would be extremely useful in a world that will only demand more decentralised collaboration.

My organization is using the group expiration policy. I've had users report that in the case of personal planner plans (those used by a single person) regular updates to the plan don't register as user-based activity. These personal plans create a private group of one, so there is little reason to make changes in SharePoint, Outlook, or Teams. Those are the documented ways to trigger a user activity auto-renewal of the associated group. Has anyone else run into this issue? Would the user's only option be to respond to the group renewal email?

As of today, Application Guard for Office is now generally available.

Files from the internet and other potentially unsafe locations can contain viruses, worms, or other kinds of malware that can harm your users’ computer and data. To help protect your users, Office opens files from potentially unsafe locations in Application Guard, a secure container that's isolated from the device through hardware-based virtualization. When Office opens files in Application Guard, users can securely read, edit, print, and save those files without having to re-open files outside the container. This feature will be off by default.

Customers will receive a Message center post on Wednesday, 1/27/2021. Microsoft 365 Roadmap Featured ID is 67101. Application Guard for Office is only available to organizations with a Microsoft 365 E5 or Microsoft 365 E5 Security license.

while trying to implement the Whiteboard templates into our weekly team meetings, we came across a few limitations.

Here are some suggestions for potential points to improve:

It would be awesome if templates were more configurable - e.g. It would be great to be able to add more columns/define the number of columns within the Kanban template (e.g. 3 columns instead of only 2) and to have the ability to preconfigure if newly added notes should are added in new rows or columns.
The different template colors for the note background is limited to only 6 colors - we would love to have the 12 colors (which is the non-template standard). In our scenario each person is haveing one color, but we have more than 6.

Switching Office update source from Configuration Manager to Office CDN

If you are cutting over devices in waves, we recommend creating a device collection and adding the Office devices which you want to move to CDN delivery. This collection should then be used to exclude updates from your CM deployments.
We also recommend disabling OfficeMgtCom on the Office Apps from the CM console (Software/Update/Client Settings) to prevent CM from delivering any update instructions to the Office apps.

Enabling Servicing Profile to Manage Office CDN updates

From the Office Apps Admin Center, you can setup the Servicing Profile which will help manage the monthly updates from the Monthly Enterprise Channel using waves while giving you the control to manage the updates. We currently use SCCM to manage updates. Any guidance on how to switch over to this model? We were looking to switch over to a CDN based auto-update model. I understand how to convert to CDN based using a combination of Group Policies to change update channels, etc.

So for existing installs, we use group policies, then for new machines, install office and set the options to match those policies from the start. So how do we get from there to managing with Servicing Profiles?

But when the team hop on the white board to use it, they don't see any grids, it says that the whiteboard cannot show this object.

Why is that?

I've been informed that this change for Semi-Annual Channel users was only introduced in v2008. Is this correct?

I've also been informed that this design change is the reason that running up the Skype for Business client now triggers the Office activation process, when it did not before. With this change we now have to license up accounts that just need to use Skype for Business with an E3/5 license to be able to connect to our own on-prem Skype for Business Server environment! Why? We never had to active Office to just use the Skype for Business client before, nor do we feel this should be the case now!

This is actually about to cause us great pain where we have on-call support teams that use the "run as" command to run Skype for Business as a "functional account", and then use the call forwarding functionality on that account to forward that account's softphone to their on-call mobile.

And that's not the end of it, technically we've been unable to complete activation when using "run as" and as such Skype for Business enters some sort of reduced functionality mode which prevents call forwarding and strips it off if already set! Rock meet hard place!

We have a bunch of feature ideas to improve the experience as well as the capabilities, some of which are:

- notifying admin's of new policies or changed policies

- enhanced reporting to show admins health of configured policies

- resultant policy set

- bulk configuration for recommended policies

- migration from existing Group Policy configuration

Is there a feature request site for updates on this? I'd like to add a few things not the least of which is a reporting capability. I would also like to find out how we can be notified when new settings are added. Currently we have to review this all manually on a regular basis and since there is not an easy way to export and compare it is hard to see if something is new or just modified a little. Last some PowerShell or other programmatic capability on both the Admin side and the client side would make this a very capable solution.

As it sits today I see promise, but this does not appear to yet have the Enterprise Level of maturity needed for a larger organization to make it useful.

To add one important note... when you use GPO or SCCM Client settings to enable\disable OfficeMgmtCom this only sets a registry key, that is all. It doesn't actually register\de-register the OfficeC2RCom COM+ Application. That's the job of Microsoft Office Click-to-Run Service. During restart, it will look to known locations for OfficeMgmtCom like Policy then Configuration to retrieve value On\Off and then register or de-register the application. So its a policy refresh followed by a restart of the service above. In terms ensuring the policy is set you can make a more intentional decision, set it to Enabled or Disabled. If for some reason you are saying the SCCM policy is not happening, I don't have a good answer here, standard troubleshooting for Client settings apply. To my recollection, GPOs win as they are domain based and SCCM client settings are in effect local policy.

Thanks for your response about 'UpdateChannel' key. It definitely works.

I've got another question. For enabling "Office 365 Client Management" on clients we used GPO on our test environment. Also we switched “Enable management of the Office 365 Client Agent” to Yes from within SCCM Client settings under Software Updates (to get O365 updates via SCCM). As you mentioned: "Only one is required, where policy overrides and take priority over all other methods." And it's true. We have this key on the machines: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\office\16.0\common\officeupdate OfficeMgmtCOM = 1

But when I turned setting "Management of Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise" to "Not Configured" in GPO, then update group policies on the machines, "OfficeMgmtCOM" disappeared from the machines. It's ok... and I expected to receive it again from SCCM client setting (because of Yes in “Enable management of the Office 365 Client Agent”), but it won't. I ran "Machine policy Retrieval & Evaluation Cycle" several times, waited for couple of days. Nothing. "OfficeC2RCom" object is registered.

What I'm doing wrong? How to switch on/off "OfficeMgmtCOM" from SCCM client settings?

Hi Colin, Yes I am. From the Microsoft "ivory tower", there appears to be very little upside in using File Shares to update Office. We believe customers should leverage CDN whenever possible combined with Windows features such as Delivery Optimization. When available, combine DO with **SCCM Connected Cache. (understand not all customers have SCCM but DO is included with Windows) Our goal is to lower IT Pro overhead low keeping Office up-to-date and that's hard to do using File shares. There are always exceptions to the rule, but broadly speaking I think this holds true.

You mention "Updating Office 365 ProPlus from File Shares has been deemphasized as a strategy" are you aware if the method of simply updating UpdateURL within "Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\ClickToRun\Configuration" to the file share location with office updates is still an option? This was the method I have implemented which appears to have stopped working. Would ideally like to resolve the current issue before implementing the options your described above i.e. SCCM
