See 3dots menu->Help and feedback->Send feedback->Send diagnostic data(link)->Experiments and Field Trials(link).
There are
"disabled_experiments": [ ... ]
"enabled_experiments": [ ... ]
and
{"feature_name": "msEdgeAreaSelect","trial_name": "SmartCopy"}
under enabled_experiments in my case.(beta 94.0.992.19, canary 95.0.1017.0, ...)

Note that this configuration is not same for all users and not configurable on user side.
Only command-line option can make change.

BTW, there is no such trial on stable 93.0.961.47 in my case but I can enable SmartCopy with just launching
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge\Application\msedge.exe" --enable-features=msEdgeAreaSelect.
I don't know whether "msEdgeAreaSelect" has some dependency or some blocker though.

Oh, the change was announced in February. I'm 7 months late then. I don't think I can change anything so late in the game. Hopefully they decide to at least have it configurable through Group Policy. That would be sufficient.

So, basically it means launch Edge from a command line, just once.

Steps:

Windows key+R

On the window that opens type cmd.exe (enter)

... opens a command prompt window...

Type the two commands below

cd C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge Beta\Application msedge --enable-features=msEdgeAreaSelect

This launches Edge and then the feature will be enabled. You can close that Edge window now, the feature will remain enabled.

I am on version 94.0.992.19 (Official build) beta and it is there, just above Web Capture.

For a few days, I saw Web Capture and Smart Copy merged on a single menu/submenu group. Now they are separate again.

When I am developing a React website using Edge as a debugger for a localhost website. Sometimes the debugger tools will break as in they become totally unresponsive. This also breaks the website as I now need to spam click the webpage for any action to happen on the site. Think buttons onClick events or navigation events. The only way I have gotten this to fix is to totally close Edge and re-open it.

The best way I can say to replicate this issue is try changing css of a site or putting, breakpoints in and trying to view a variable.

Unfortunately the only way to recover the favicons is clicking each favorite to open it. If you could file feedback via the ... menu > Help & Feedback > Send Feedback, and check the box to include diagnostic data, that'll help the team look in to what is causing this.

Sticky pinned sidebars?

Looking to MS for answers to my question -

So, we now have pin-able sidebars for Favorites, History etc. Is there any intention to enable them to be made sticky so that they will remain pinned or not after the browser is restarted? This would preferably be by a UI switch setting so users have a choice.

It sounds like the New Tab Page is specifically coming up in Hebrew, but if you navigate to other pages are those also displaying in Hebrew? What about your settings pages? (Trying to confirm because the New Tab Page has a different settings flow!)
Also can you confirm your Edge Version?

Yes, on the edge language page both settings are set to English (U.S.). When I tap the Edge icon the page comes up in Hebrew although I can enter in English and go from there. It appears that the screen wants to come up in Hebrew because that's where I am now...in Jerusalem...but I want it to come up totally in English as if I were in the United States. Thank you.

Hi! The closest thing I could find was ClearBrowsingDataOnExit Policy (https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/deployedge/microsoft-edge-policies#clearbrowsingdataonexit) but it will clear other data as well.

Hello! The team took a look at the screenshots you have provided it looks like the UserDataSnapshotRetentionLimit policy is set under User Configuration rather than Computer Configuration. If it is under User Configuration, this would also explain why the snapshots are being partially deleted. Each time the snapshots are cleaned up, it is only deleting the profile’s information from the user data folder and leaving all of the other users’ profiles information in the snapshot folder.

They suggest setting the group policy via Computer Configuration. Would you be able to give that a try?

Loss of Favicons on Microsoft Edge Chromium

After a Windows 10 update all the favicons for my huge mass of favourites have disappeared - they are replaced by a blank page shape.
I have searched the web but cannot see a fix.
Does anybody know how I can recover ALL of these favicons ? Individual recovery is not an option.
If I use a favourite site the favicon returns - this is no use for the entire list.

I'm afraid it's hard to understand what yo umean by "multiple issues", "Internal file shares and servers", or why you've linked to the HTTP authentication policy documentation.

This thread (and my post regarding changes coming to Edge 95) concerns the use of file:// URIs in the browser. It does not apply to HTTP/HTTPS urls.

Can you please be precise about what URLs you're using and what problems you're having?

Secondly, are you going to ask if you wanted to press every individual key press just because some users are fat-fingered and can't cope with fixing their own mistakes by pressing F12 a second time?

Putting jokes aside, the screenshot is part of other feedback of mine. The hand writing explains all.

Have a nice transition (or run away) from Opera. I did it recently and with success. But me, equally as You, badly need such graphic editor as the one offered in Opera, too. For the feedbacks here, for example. I've checked few days ago LibreOffice Draw, GNU/Edge and Opera to these drawing/commenting tasks. Opera is ,ekhm..., well, the Queen, or the King (?), in this competition.

Yes. I have a 3-monitor setup on a work computer and this is a coding problem, apparently.
A menu (favorites, for example) should opn on the browser window on the screen on which has the actively used window, not a monitor or 2 over. It's not correct; Google Chrome has the same problem. We cannot open different browser types to combat this and the system is admin controlled (VPN / internal), limited to one browser type. Thanks.

1) GNU/Edge Dev can work with multiple profiles aka config files (folders). It saves DRAM footprint. One of my two instances is set as default. Why the other is "banished" from using "Add text"?

2) Why Polish language was left behind? It has many diacritic characters as most of the languages you mentioned.

3) A Bold would be a nice option, if not badly necessary at last!

typically we don't have any control over what happens in a webpage. If it wants to set focus somewhere, it can set focus anywhere it wants. Any HTML element can take focus just by calling its focus function. In fact, most webpages with search boxes tend to set focus there since searching for content is the number one thing people do on them. Also, is it possible this is being done by an extension you have installed?

The bigger font size is by design. It's part of our work to refresh the visuals for Windows 11, and you'll see that it now matches the size in other menus like the right-click menu. As far as sorting your folders, if you do that from other places like the Favorites menu or page, you won't need to worry about the popups closing.

Please try hovering over the text you have added to the document. Once the cursor change to the edit text cursor, click on the text. This will now show the entire textbox along with the mini menu which will allow you to edit the text you have added or delete it.

You can also right click over the text you have added and click on the Edit text or Delete text option in the right click menu to edit or Delete text.

This update broke the Space Jam theme and I have now lost it forever because I reverted to a built-in theme hoping to get Space Jam to work again after reinstalling it but it is no longer available in the Add-on store. Should've backed it up. Edit: Got the theme folder from one of my other laptops since Edge on it as well has the Space Jam theme installed.

At least the address bar's Korean IME input mode amnesia seems to have finally been cured (and hopefully doesn't recur).

There is a separate thread about datalist issues. Another issue has been identified and the fix is currently being worked on by the team. I just got updated to 93, and there's the usual splash screen with info on updates. "See ratings!" "Apply all your coupons!" "Save money!". All of this sounds exactly like the privacy invading nonsense that is affecting just about all free software these days.

I think it's a huge mistake to not accompany all this with a disclaimer stating why this DOES respect your privacy. I came to Edge from Chrome because of privacy concerns, but by now Edge is beginning to feel like the worse of the two, with built-in "coupon stuff".

We had a discussion before that Edge does take some care to keep this info private, but without communicating this to the user, Edge looks as bad as or even worse than other options out there. Please reconsider this approach! As in, maybe put 'privacy communication approach' on a team meeting agenda in the coming weeks?

We have received a lot of love from you ever since we started our journey of building a PDF reader that addresses all your annotations and form fill needs. Taking another step towards fulfilling that goal, we are now introducing a feature that lets you add text directly to your PDF documents.

Do you remember the last time you encountered that annoying PDF document that was meant to be a form but had no editable fields? We are now bringing an end to all your form filling woes with the ‘Add text’ feature that lets you add text to the document with customizable font size, color, and spacing options. All you need to do is click on the button in the toolbar and place the cursor anywhere on the document to add the text box and start typing. You can also click on ‘Add text’ in the right click menu anywhere on the document to add a text box. Try it to out type in text and take notes on top and in the margins of the PDF documents you are reading!

Once you have placed the text box, you can change the font color, size and text spacing through the mini menu attached to the textbox. The default font size is set to 12px which you can increase up to 48px or decrease up to 9px. The default color is set to blue you can change to black, green, or red based on what you need that day.

To make your form filling experience even smoother, we retain the last textbox format set by you for as long as your PDF document is open.

I understand the change in frequency for these updates reflecting the significant development already achieved. As a Canary users, receiving (mostly) daily builds, it would be useful to know when some of the particularly long-standing items are on the horizon.

I am thinking of the "Provide an option to prevent auto-play of video and audio when you open a website" item as an example. This has been on the list for 106 weeks as of the last update, which is more than two years. Similarly for, the "Tab set aside" alternative planned entry.

Even if it is only in the monthly status updates, it would be good to know if they are being progressed or if they are simply on still on the backlog list.

It does make my normal ways of working more difficult. I have to manually collapse folders frequently so my list of favorites folders does not turn into a very long scroll list. This is particularly true when I use subfolders, meaning they have to be collapsed as well in order to keep the list manageably short.

So far I have not identified a different approach that allows me to organize my favorites, but avoid lots of clicking to manually collapse expanded folders and sub-folders.

For me, the problem with double-click to close a tab is that it's inconsistent and therefore bad UI. Double-click, virtually everywhere else, performs the "Default" action you could select from the actions/verbs you get when you right-click on an object. Closing is NEVER the default action. Therefore, even if it did save some small number of people time, it's bad, confusing, and inconsistent UI. This is one case where it shouldn't even be available as an option. If there's a third-party extension that provides this capability, then that's great, because if you choose to modify the browser behavior, that's up to you, but it should NOT come from MS as an Edge setting. (Like the terrible broken of Ctrl-F to Forward instead of Find in Outlook, like it does in all other Office applications, supposedly because this was important to Bill Gates 25+ years ago).

This would damage the entire Windows UI and UX, where consistency should always be the prime directive to UI design. An inconsistency in one place is effectively an inconsistency everyplace.

Ehm, I'm not so sure yet. When I opened my question/discussion I was simply unsure about what to expect, but unluckily so far I'm still not 100% if any more problems might be found.
Maybe a known one might be the one I documented of an update still only remaining in pending state because of the 2 msedge.exe instances still unexpectedly running in background even if this wasn't really expected to happen (and its additional dump creation after OS resuming from being suspended into memory).

Maybe another is the (annoying) always indefinitely rolling icon seen while 'Checking for updates' is displayed... (this because IMHO if after some seconds Edge should be still unaware of updates availability then it also should give user a proper message...)

Well yes, I am logged in as admin(MS account), with Sync enabled. My Windows version is 21H1, and I don't clearly know what browser version I use, but I haven't received any updates in the past few days.

But let's just say I'm using the latest version so far.

And by the way, I'm talking about how my browser stops responding, and then crashes. When I reopen it, all my browsing history is lost, but thankfully, I get it all back.

Still have the problem with the cursor always going to the search box on YouTube.

If I refresh the YouTube home page, and perhaps click away to another tab, then come back to it, the cursor is in the search box and the drop down of my searches is in focus.

Edge 94 was released to beta on desktop almost two weeks ago, while on Android it's still stuck on 93. Meanwhile, the dev channel does get regular updates on Android. What's going on at the beta channel on Android?

again (& other insiders as well...),

another update for your awareness of what else I've verified.

Even if running 'MicrosoftEdgeUpdate.exe' (with /broker option on my laptop) is not latest yesterday I also additionally noticed that anyway it's already running together with msedgeupdate.dll from latest v1.3.151.27 update subfolder that was also received during my installation of Edge Enterprise, so now I'm expecting that most of real versioning logic might indeed be there.

And this also (side) explains quite good why ITMT my Edge Enterprise already received and installed properly v93.0.961.47 since 9/13 (late afternoon in my TZ).

P.S. Only issue (indeed quite annoying) I see at this point is the never ending rolling icon that appears near 'Checking for updates' and that so far was no more able to properly tell me that another update was available or even that it already took place and it's only just awaiting me to restart Edge (& so far I only saw this message while I was still working into Edge when 1st update took place from v92.0.902.73 to v92.0.902.84 :o ).

I've tried this before and they definitely gradually start reappearing as I switch between virtual desktops. I'm now on 93.0.961.47 and there is still no change.

You will need to use the very cumbersome way of setting it in the Group Policies, the do work. Although they are reset every time new Windows 10 (now 11) build install, so I have given up on this on my local machine.

It's very large (about 4Gb), and so I would exclude it from the daily backup of my user profile.

Can I do it (exclude blob_storage folder) without jeopardize a possible restore of my user profile data?

Wasn't hiding the Extension button already possible earlier, and it was just missing in a few recent versions, and back then it worked just like now - resulted in showing all extension buttons? In any case, hiding the extension button while it brings all the extensions visible makes no sense. Please allow hiding both extension button and selected extensions. That is the way.

this happens for all of our user no matter if win 10 client or Server 2016 citrix terminalserver with roaming profiles. it just cost a lot of space on our roaming profile file share.

fun fact. my edge beta profile on the same workstation seems to work as expected.

would be interesting to know at whats the trigger for the housekeeping. on every start? change of major version? every x hours?

whats also interesting. changedate on all obsolete folders is installation date of the last minor version. in this case 93.0.961.47

i will take the support as second stop if we cant find a solution here.

There's a chromium fork called Cent Browser, which have a feature that allow users to search for selected text in non-default search engines, by right-clicking and choose "Search other engines for" submenu.

I used to use this browser and changed to edge for a year, and every time I have to copy.the text and paste into the address bar to search with a specific SE. It'll make Edge more powerful if there's such a submenu in Edge, and a selector on the search sidebar, and if possible, a SE selector in address bar just like Firefox, as not everybody can memorize all SEs in their browser. It'll be even better if there's a hide option to hide some of the SEs from the submenu and selectors (still can be used by abbr. + Tab key).

Hello! Just to confirm, after waiting the 65 seconds the new Enterprise Mode Site List is not loading on your devices as well?

A previous user mentioned seeing the highlighted URL (in screenshot below) for the Location of the Enterprise Mode Site List when the issue reproduces. Are you seeing the same?

Then if you click "Force update" do you see the updated list? This information will help when following up with the IE mode team.

Nice selection of bug fixes as usual, and some great new features. But what's up with the huge text size in my Favourites the last few weeks? I was hoping that would have been fixed today.

See these examples. The text size of the folders in the drop down is bigger than those on the Favourites bar, and the text size of items in the folders is also bigger than the folder names.

I also left some feedback a while ago to be able to be able to Sort a Favourites folder by right clicking on it, and also if I move a Favourite's position inside a folder, the folder closes. That's quite annoying if I want to move several items, it should stay open so long as my mouse is there.

Thank you for your follow up. It would be good to have a response from the Feedback items we submitted. This has been going on for several weeks and has been reported multiple times. Based on your response, we can now see that this change is considered a feature, not a bug.

While not wanting to distract the team from resolving issues, this information would be helpful to avoid reporting the perceived persistence of a "bug". The email acknowledging Feedback submissions includes the sentence "We'll keep you posted on our progress.". I appreciate it when I do receive an update, but it does not happen often.

There will always design decisions that don't reflect individual ways of working. For my way of working, the behavior of the Favorites keeps getting further and further away from the smooth flyout design of the legacy Edge.

That said, I appreciate the continuing progress. The only other feature change that I really miss is the blocking of auto-playing audio and video. Since this is still on the Planned list, I look forward to seeing the implementation.

Deleting saved passwords using a policy Edge for Mac

Edge Dev Default Search Broken

On Microsoft Edge Dev 95.0.1000.0, type search terms into the address bar and hit enter. Nothing happens. I also noticed that highlighting text and right-clicking no longer has the option to search for the highlighted text. If I perform the same procedure on Microsoft Edge Stable 93.0.961.38, it searches Google with the entered/selected terms, as expected.

I noticed that the default search engine in Edge Settings appears to be corrupt in Edge Dev and looks okay in Edge Prod.

In our company, the default search engine is managed by a GPO, per the instructions / example in the GPMC. This registry entry is shared between all versions of Edge on a machine…so it seems as though Edge Dev has the issue if Edge Stable still works fine.:

Added features:

Fixed an issue where debug.log files sometimes mysteriously appear on the device.
Fixed an issue where the different headers of the History menu don’t show the correct sections when clicked.
Mobile:
- Fixed an issue where SSO no longer works.
- Fixed an issue where signing into the browser sometimes doesn’t enable sync as well.
- Fixed an issue where the browser can be signed into with the same account multiple times.
- Fixed an issue on iOS where signing into the browser fails.
- Fixed an issue where a sign-in error is shown in Settings even though there is no error.
- Fixed an issue on Android where autofill sometimes fails.
- Fixed an issue where images sometimes don’t render properly.
- Fixed an issue on iOS where certain webpage resources sometimes don’t load.
- Fixed an issue on iOS where certain popups will close as soon as they’re opened.
- Fixed an issue where links that open in new tabs sometimes close or navigate back as soon as they’re opened.
Fixed an issue in WebView2 apps where flickering appears (Issue 1621).
Fixed an issue where popups opened from IE mode tabs are sometimes scaled incorrectly.
Obsoleted the management policy to control if Legacy Same Site Cookie Behavior is Enabled.

Known issues:

Users of certain ad blocking extensions may experience playback errors on YouTube. As a workaround, temporarily disabling the extension should allow playback to proceed. See this help article for more details.
Some users are still running into an issue where all tabs and extensions immediately crash with a STATUS_INVALID_IMAGE_HASH error. The most common cause of this error is outdated security or antivirus software from vendors like Symantec, and in those cases, updating that software will fix it.
Users of the Kaspersky Internet Suite who have the associated extension installed may sometimes see webpages like Gmail fail to load. This failure is due to the main Kaspersky software being out of date, and is thus fixed by making sure the latest version is installed.
Some users are still seeing favorites get duplicated. This issue should be reduced now that automatic deduplication has been introduced into Insider channels, but we’re still rolling that out in Stable. We’ve also seen duplication happen when running the manual deduplicator on multiple machines before either machine has a chance to fully sync its changes, so make sure to leave plenty of time in between runs of the deduplicator.
Some users are seeing “wobbling” behavior when scrolling using trackpad gestures or touchscreens, where scrolling in one dimension also causes the page to subtly scroll back and forth in the other. Note that this only affects certain websites and seems to be worse on certain devices. This is most likely related to our ongoing work to bring scrolling back to parity with Edge Legacy’s behavior, so if this behavior is undesirable, you can temporarily turn it off by disabling the edge://flags/#edge-experimental-scrolling flag.
