Word freezes and restarts after opening embedded PDF links

There are PDF links in the comment boxes of various Word files I am working on.

Word freezes and usually requires a restart and recovery of the file after opening a PDF link.

If it's a web link, this does not happen.

Has anybody experienced this?

Is there any work around?
