Word becomes sluggish with increasing numbers of internal hyperlinks. Suggestions? Solutions?

My Word documents become increasingly unresponsive as I add internal hyperlinks to them. This seems odd as I using a T7910 Dell Workstation with 64GB of memory. Now I plan to create a large Word doc...
