Windows 11 Insider Preview 10.0.26052.1100 (ge_release) Install error - 0xc1900101
My computer simply won't update to the newest Windows 11 Insider Preview.
Device name: DESKTOP-O4BECGJ
Processor: AMD Ryzen 9 5980HX with Radeon Graphics 3.30 GHz
Installed RAM: 16.0 GB (15.4 GB usable)
Device ID: A51A9A96-3A94-4F0D-924D-4DD3F3645DE4
Product ID: 00342-20723-36114-AAOEM
System type: 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
Pen and touch: No pen or touch input is available for this display
Edition: Windows 11 Home Insider Preview
Version: 23H2
Installed on: 2/8/2024
OS build: 26040.1000
Experience: Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.26040.1000.0
Every time I go to install this update, my computer freezes at startup, then after many minutes of being frozen I will just get the Green Screen of Death that says ":( Your Windows Insider Build ran into a problem and needs to restart. We're just collecting some error info, and then we'll restart for you." Once the computer does restart, the update gets undone.
Another thing I'd like to add is I tried running the Windows Update troubleshooter and it says "An error occurred while troubleshooting: A problem is preventing the troubleshooter from starting. Troubleshooters have moved and this tool will be retired. Learn more."

It's rather annoying actually because it attempts to update against my will and when it does, it locks up the system having to manually power it off and back on, then there's always a chance it will ask for the bitlocker to unlock the darned thing or it will do a rollback and fail and try again later...

Sounds like you are trying to update a nickel release with a germanium release. You're are probably a Beta not a Canary or Dev channel insider. Please review the differences: https://www.askvg.com/windows-11-insider-channels-canary-dev-beta-and-release-preview/#difference_between_canary_dev_beta_and_release_preview_channels

Now for Canary and Dev. - Microsoft has released an identical Windows Insider build (this allows you to switch to Dev. ) This is a temporary opportunity to downgrade the Insider channel.

- rbowman2235Copper ContributorThat would be wonderful if I could get there. I've killed the updater, removed the SoftwareDistribution folder, restarted, and it always comes back to Windows 11 Insider Preview 26058.1000 (ge_release) which fails.

Still on build 26040 because of this error.
I see build 26058 on Win Update, no newer builds there and no clue how to get them.
I tried live update from newer ISOs (today with newest 26080) and always with the same effect: setup quits to desktop with no error (almost on beginning or after accepting license, when uncheck updates).
With today's 26080 build MS wrote:
"[UPDATED] We’ve made some more changes to help reduce the number of rollbacks (with error code 0xC1900101) when installing the latest builds and are continuing to investigate reports. If your PC rolls back trying to install this build, please file feedback in Feedback Hub."
but I can't get this by WinUpdate huh.
My last try will be dirty install booting from USB. I will give you feedback.
- rbowmanCopper ContributorAnother attempt another fail with the same error. This was more dramatic in that it presented a failure screen and attempted to rollback changes. After several reboots and a long time it came back as 26040.1000.

I removed my AMD Graphic card but was still unsuccessful in installing the update. So, at least for me, the failure to update is not having an AMD graphics card.
My processor is an Intel-based one: an Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-9700K CPU @ 3.60GHz, which is supported by Windows 11.
I use Norton Driver Update to check if any of my drivers are up to date: they all are.
So let us take a step back: first, this is a problem for how many users- Does anyone know?
Second, this failure to update has not been solved by a subsequent patch - Is this correct? And if so, what is the patch ID?
Third, Microsoft has many resources to fix this problem, so I think they know the solution or have a fundamental problem. In either case, they should tell us what they know.
I am starting to get impatient with Microsoft.
- Alabamatom1963Steel ContributorTry getting more information my accessing your error logs. ( https://www.windowscentral.com/software-apps/windows-11/how-to-get-started-with-event-viewer-on-windows-11 ) From there you should be able to narrow the problem down and work on finding a solution. I hope this helps.

Great Idea, copied most of install errors, but most of them do not make any sense to me.
Her are some of the error msg,

- Rinaldo1961Copper ContributorISO where to obtain?
- 4tune8Copper Contributor
Alabamatom1963 tried the ISO and same except it gave me more info "0xC1900101 - 0x20017
Installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during BOOT operation" and looking up 0x20017 says its a driver issue. I've checked all the drivers and can't see any issue. I'll try removing AMD adrenaline edition as that was the last driver update I'd received.- Alabamatom1963Steel ContributorLet us know if that is the problem. Might help others if it solves your problem.
- jmascensaoCopper ContributorMS after almost 30 days, it is a real shame the problem is not solved.......not even with AI...lol
- rbowmanCopper ContributorI've hit this before when MS slipped out a 'Windows Next' update that would never install but at least they fixed that in less than a month.

I had this same problem (Install error - 0xc1900101).
I went to and created the ISO for the 26052.1 update. When I mounted and ran it I chose its default settings (to stay connected to the internet and save all my files, apps and settings). It crashed and rolled-back just as before.
So, I had made two changes to the desktop box since the last successful update: added an SSD drive with Ubuntu-Linux and replaced a USB-Wifi adapter with a newer USB-Wifi adapter. So I removed the SSD (leaving the two NVME's, one with Fedora-Linux) and removed the USB-Wifi adapter.
Then I ran the Systemd Configuration utility and disabled all non-Microsoft services and disabled all Startup apps. And I also ran the Device Manager and uninstalled and removed the AMD Vega graphics driver so that only the Microsoft graphics driver was installed (I had issues with the AMD driver once before).
In order to gaurantee that the AMD Vega driver does not reinstall during the update you must either "roll back" the driver in the Device Manager (not just uninstall it), or disable automatic driver updates.
Then I rebooted, mounted the ISO and ran it. In its setup I chose no internet updates (the was no adapter) and to REMOVE all my apps and settings. But I kept all my files. This worked. The update was successful.
I don't know which change fixed it. I'm guessing it was letting the ISO remove all my settings and apps. I have installed the AND graphics driver and connected the newer USB-Wifi adapter with no problems. I connected to the internet and ran Windows Update and it updated from 26052.1 to the current update 26063.1. Everything is working.- dierkmCopper ContributorGreat, But I believe the purpose of the DEV insider program to tell MS what does not work.
I do not go beyond what the average Joe would try on the PC.
Since it appears that hundred maybe thousands have problems to update that version.
the ball is in MS court.- Rinaldo1961Copper ContributorStill no solution from Microsoft. Tryed for the 3e time, stil same
- jkochanoCopper ContributorI have the same problem, and I was looking through my setupact log files.
The only entries were the following;
The Windows message “0x80070057” represents an error caused by invalid arguments or invalid parameters. This is why, in some cases, you will also find the additional information “E_INVALIDARG” or “ERROR_INVALID_PARAMETER”, which explicitly refers to these problems.Nov 16, 2022
