Can I download youtube videos without premium for offline viewing?

I am a marine biologist who conducts ecological monitoring on offshore islands all year round. Because the network signal at the station is extremely weak (average disconnection for more than 6 hours per day), I need to download YouTube videos without premium for offline viewing (such as academic lectures, equipment operation guides) to the local hard disk in advance. It is known that Premium is the official way, but the project funding is limited, so I am looking for alternatives.

I tried the following method, but failed:

  • Python script + yt--dlp:
Get the code through GitHub, configure the proxy and successfully download 720p videos, but some content triggers YouTube "age verification" (such as involving sensitive species), and you need to manually log in to the cookie. The process is complicated and there are account risks.
  • Online tool test: 480p videos can be downloaded, but high-definition quality requires payment, and some links fail to resolve (prompt "copyright restrictions").

My demands:

  • A stable solution for downloading YouTube videos without premium is needed
  • Open source tools or low-tech methods are preferred

Note: All operations comply with the academic fair use principle, only necessary materials are cached, and online access permissions are deleted immediately after downloading.

I hope you can give me some advice, thank you!

  • I won't go with Youtube premium as it is not the best tool for downloading youtube videos. There are so many restrictions with it as far as I know. Some of the reasons are:

Closed restrictions: YouTube Premium's “Watch Offline” feature is limited to playback within the official app, and cannot be exported as a standalone file (e.g., MP4/MP3), so users are not free to edit, save, or use it across devices.

High cost and low value for money: If you subscribe to a membership just for downloading videos (about $12 per month), it is much higher than the cost of a free tool. For users with low-frequency downloading needs, it is not economical enough.

Resolution limitation: Some HD/4K videos may not be able to be saved completely offline, and the bitrate compression of the platform itself cannot be broken.

Format and scene freedom: Third-party tools (such as YouTube Video Downloader) can directly save to MP4/MKV and other common formats, supporting multi-device playback, secondary editing or backup.

No Region/Account Dependency: Free tools are not affected by YouTube region restriction or account blocking risk, and the downloaded content is permanently localized and stored.

In fact, there so many alternatives to help you download youtube videos without premium, such as browser extensions and command line tool.

I have personally tested a set of open source solutions to download YouTube videos without premium stably. The following is a command line method that has been verified in a weak network environment for 6 months:

Step 1. Install yt--dlp (a more active branch of youtube---dl)

    pip install yt--dlp

Step 2. After logging into your YouTube account in Chrome, install the "Get cookies.txt" extension to export cookies.txt (the key to bypassing age verification)

Step 3. Execute the download command (including proxy configuration):

    yt--dlp --proxy http://your_proxy:port --cookies cookies.txt -f "bestvideo[height<=1080]+bestaudio" https://youtu.be/videoID

It can stably obtain 1080p quality and automatically bypass the age limit of sensitive videos. Compared with online tools, this solution avoids copyright restriction warnings through local cookies verification, and does not require any payment. The project team has been running on ThinkPad T14 for 11 months, downloading an average of about 3.2GB of academic videos per day, which fully meets the cache requirements of the device operation guide.

This command line solution for downloading YouTube videos without a premium sounds really solid.

However, there are a few points that I am curious about:
This method of exporting cookies.txt can indeed bypass some restrictions, but will YouTube periodically clean up the login status, causing the cookies to become invalid? Is there a more permanent solution?

Your average daily download volume on the ThinkPad T14 is 3.2GB, which is quite impressive! Did you use an automated script to pull in batches? Is there any way to optimize download scheduling, such as limiting the speed to avoid bandwidth being occupied?

I personally recommend AllClipdown for downloading YouTube videos without Premium. It’s easy to use, no ads, and works perfectly for offline viewing, especially for academic stuff like lectures.

Using an online tool like yztmp3 to download YouTube videos without a premium account definitely has its pros, but there are a few downsides I think you should be aware of.

      Disadvantages:

      • Connection Issues: Depending on how busy the website is, the conversion speed can be slow, especially during peak hours. Sometimes, it feels like waiting in line at a coffee shop when there’s a new flavor everyone’s checking out, and you just want your caffeine fix already!
      • Video Quality Limits: Even if they say they support 1080p, there can be glitches or interruptions when downloading higher-quality videos. You might end up with a pixelated version of your favorite concert video when all you wanted was the full HD experience.
      • Security Risks: I sometimes worry about the security risks involved. Ad plugins can potentially lead to malware or scamming sites. Plus, who wants to expose their device to that kind of risk?

Indeed, using online tools like yztmp3 to download YouTube videos without a premium is indeed convenient, but the drawbacks are also real, especially the lagging internet speed and video quality problems, which are simply maddening!

However, have you ever realized that some tools claim to support 4K downloads, but the actual download feels almost as mush as 480p? 😂 Is this the website's fault, or is YouTube tampering with it?

Another question, a lot of online tools are popping up ads like crazy, and some pages even jump directly to inexplicable websites, how do you think this can be avoided? Is there a safer way to get around these potholes?

No one mentioned the browser extension? This is a quite popular solution to download youtube videos with premium and most importantly it is totally free!

YTZD Video Downloader is a browser extension (supports Chrome, Firefox, etc.) that allows users to download video or audio files directly from the YouTube page. Its core features include one-click video link resolution, support for MP4 (360p to 1080p) and MP3 format conversion, and a built-in easy download manager.

The plug-in interface is seamlessly integrated with YouTube and no need to jump to a third-party website to download videos from youtube without premium. However, some versions may need to be installed manually due to browser policies, and the free version may have ads or download limits.

Step 1: Visit the Chrome Store or Firefox Add-ons page, search for “YTZD Video Downloader” and install it; if it's not available on the official store, you'll need to load a third-party .crx file in developer mode (a security risk).

Step 2: Open the target YouTube video page → Click the YTZD plugin icon in the browser toolbar → Choose the format (MP4/MP3) and resolution → Click “Download” to save it locally.

    Notice

Privacy: For personal use and only download the free public content.

Security: Avoid installing plug-ins from unofficial sources to prevent malware.

Stability: The plugin may not work due to YouTube updates, wait for the developer to fix it.

I will avoid using online video downloaders for downloading youtube videos as it is not safe and the video quality is too bad!

The core advantages of using desktop youtube video download software are efficiency, stability and functionality. Compared with online tools or browser plug-ins, such software usually supports higher resolution (e.g., 4K/8K), batch downloading of playlists or entire channel content, and is free from online ads or pop-ups. In addition, desktop software often has the ability to download youtube videos without premium account. This eliminates the need to paste links repeatedly, and can even automatically synchronize subscription content, making it suitable for long-term or high-frequency downloads.

On the other hand, desktop software will be continuously updated to cope with changes in platform policies and minimize download failures due to technical problems; users can also manage their downloads more directly, avoiding the potential privacy risks of online tools. However, it should be noted that the use of the software is still subject to user terms, and some advanced features need to be unlocked for a fee, so the choice should be weighed according to individual needs.

I could suggest using ytzmp3.nu, an online tool focusing on YouTube video conversion, supporting fast conversion of videos to MP3 audio or MP4 video files, free to use without registration. With its simple interface and intuitive operation, users can parse multiple resolution (up to 1080P) and format options by simply pasting in a link, and it also offers batch download functionality, which is suitable for scenarios where audio needs to be extracted or high-definition clips need to be saved. However, the site relies on advertisements to sustain its operations, and there may be pop-ups or misleading buttons on the page, so proceed with caution to avoid inadvertent contact.

How to download youtube videos without premium

    1. Find the target video in YouTube and click on the Share button → Copy link.

    2. Open your browser and visit the website.

    3. Paste the copied link into the website input box → Click the “Parse” or “Start” button.

    4. After parsing the website, you will see a variety of format options (MP4, MP3, 720P, 1080P, etc.) → Select the desired format and click “Download”.

    5. The browser will automatically start the download and save it locally.

    Cautions and Limitations:
The conversion speed and stability depends on the server load and may be delayed during peak hours. In addition, some users have reported interruptions when downloading HD videos, so it is recommended to use the tool with network acceleration tools and be aware of the potential security risks of advertisement plug-ins.

    Method 1: Using a Website
There are various websites out there designed specifically for downloading YouTube videos without premium. A couple of popular ones include Y2mete and SaveFrot. All you have to do is:

    • Find the YouTube video you want to download.
    • Copy the link from the address bar.
    • Go to one of those websites and paste the link into the provided field.
    • Choose your format (like MP4 for video), hit download, and bam! You’ve got your video saved.

Tip: Just be cautious with ads and pop-ups—don't accidentally click on sketchy stuff!

    Method 2: Using Microsoft Edge
If you’re on Microsoft Edge, there’s actually a neat little trick you can use that might help. Edge has a built-in feature that allows you to view your downloaded media quickly. While it won’t let you download videos from YouTube directly, it provides a seamless experience for managing your files.

    • While you have the video open, open the Edge DevTools (press F12).
    • Go to the “Network” tab and refresh the page.
    • Look for media files in the download section; this might give you some leads on how to do things.

    Method 3: Mobile Apps
If you're more of an on-the-go kind of person, there are mobile apps that can help you stash those videos. Just search the relevant app stores for apps designed for downloading videos.

    • Always keep in mind the legal side of things when you download youtube videos without premium!
    • YouTube’s terms don’t allow for unauthorized downloads, so make sure you’re okay with what you’re
    • doing. A good rule of thumb is to download videos that are free to use or that you own.
