Data Protection Manager: Outstanding good idea

Dears,

I'm using DPM for a while already in order to backup servers and client computers, I recently had a really creative idea, so creative, that I can't imagine anybody else ever will have such idea: When performing a client uninstall from the DPM Central Management Console, check the computer name!

Current situation: Imagine a client computer which is being backed up with DPM. Without removing the DPM client, OS will be re-installed and joined with a new computer name to the domain. One of the first steps: Install the DPM client. Ok so far. Then the admin notices the outdated protected computer in DPM and performs a client uninstall. The uninstall runs through and the outdated computer disappears from DPM. The DPM client of the newly installed OS from now on shows just an error. Cause: The DHCP lease with the previous computer name is still existing and let DNS point to the newly installed OS.

From my point of view, DPM must compare the computer name in the DB with the real computer name. Otherwise, on every client uninstall, one cannot be sure to uninstall the client from the right computer.

Thanks,

Markus
