Initial thoughts - Japan

Initial thoughts

I work as teacher / librarian/ IT support at an International School in Japan currently using 365 & 365 video.

Pros

  • I’m delighted to see Stream address the horrendously unintuitive UI that was/is 365 video. Stream looks really nice!
  • On looks alone I’d hope for higher teacher adoption
  • Channels/playlists/watchlist – yes!
  • Playback of video at 1080! Not essential but restricted to 720 coupled with the dreadful compression in 365 did not please many of my contributors.

Not as it should be

  • Edit buttons do not work. On my uploads page I cannot edit anything, or delete anything. Nothing happens when I click “edit”.
  • I had three videos that were interrupted during upload (apparently). They are stuck at 0%. I cannot restart or delete these.
  • As I cannot edit I cannot add videos to a channel.

Thoughts and questions

  • Hashtags. Is there a way to globally manage these? An admin defined list would prevent each teacher from creating their own set of tags. Uniformity is essential for this to work schoolwide.
  • A prompt indicating optimum custom channel image size would be useful
  • Can I hide published videos? Teachers like to choose when students can view their videos.
  • I see that 365 video will merge with stream. If that means that teachers will not have to reupload content, please let me know!

A great looking product so far. If I can just get the edit button to work I can tinker further.

Thank you

Tim

Glad that you are liking the iteration / improvements we made from our learnings with O365 Video.

    Sorry about these issues.

Edit button doesn't do anything - Are you on a mac + safari? There was other folks in a different thread reporting the same thing just now. We are investigating why our edit button doesn't take you to the edit page on Mac + Safari. So sorry about our bugs. Can you try on Chrome or FF for Mac and see if the edit/delete buttons work?

Sorry about the interupted uploads. You can try another browser or when we get that fixed you should be able to delete those 0% videos. I just tried it and I am able to delete failed uploaded videos.

Add videos to channels - As I metioned I think edit and ... drawer actions are working on Mac + Chrome or Mac + FF. Just not on Safari. You can also uplaod videos to a channel by navigating to the channel first and then uploading. Or re-uplaod the video and pick the channel during upload.

Hashtags - No there is not a way to globally manage these as #hashtags are just text in the description of a video / channel. And you click them they just simply run a search against that term. Hashtags are meant for community organization without being managed. Channels and groups are the way in Stream to have managed organization of videos.

Channel Image Size - Good suggestion. We don't display the channel image in many places and in most it's fairly small image. We show you that we want it to be square as an indication of the aspect ratio that we'll use.

Hide published videos - If a video is published it means that it's viewable by those that have permissions to it. You could always remove the permissions to a video untill you are ready to let people see it. But we don't have a simple "unpublish" button at this time. If you want to add an idea for that in the forums for others to comment and vote on that would be great.  https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/Microsoft-Stream-Ideas/idb-p/StreamIdeas

O365 Video Transition to Stream - Yes when we finish our transition service we'll move over your existing videos/channels into Stream for you without re-upload. See this article for more information:
