portfolio analysis in project for the web
- Oct 16, 2024
Hello mahnazansari ,
This feature is only in Project Online as you have seen, it is not in Project for the web unfortunately.

Project for the Web has a long ways to go before it can ever be an enterprise project management application, so don't hold your breath waiting for a Portfolio Analysis tool to be added to Project for the Web. If you really need to use Portfolio Analysis, I would recommend you abandon Project for the Web and start using Project Online or Microsoft Project Server instead. Hope this helps.
I came across this post and have a similar need and another question. We are using Project Online's Project Center for enterprise projects. I have also introduced Project for the Web for use by project managers for projects that are lightweight, collaborative. The main reason we continue to use Project Online is for the Project Center capability - easy dashboard across projects. I was hoping to soon have everyone use Project for the Web, as it is easier for people to use but it is lacking in many areas still. To be honest, Project for the Web and its evolution is so slow - new enhancements move at a snail pace. One Question (out of so many) - Is it possible to use Power BI reporting to mesh data from both DataVerse(Project for the Web) and Project Online into one dashboard? Second question - how can you add a standard column in Project for the Web that itwill carry through for ALL project created. (for example, Business Unit - with dropdown values). So, that I can report on projects by Business Unit, for example.
I am new to this community, so let me know if I not using this forum correctly. Thank you.

Karen_Chappell -- To the best of my knowledge, I am not aware of any way to create a Power BI report that collects data from Project Online AND Project for the Web. Also, regarding the creation of enterprise custom columns in Project for the Web, the application does not yet offer this feature. Keep in mind that it is a low-end tool that is intended for small and simple projects; and it is NOT a full enterprise project management tool like Project Online. Sorry, but hope this helps.

Hi Karen_Chappell,
It is possible, but it can require some more intermediate to advanced power BI Skills to get all the data you might be looking for (depending on what you need), but I was able to pull together something that worked for my company having never used power BI before using the following steps:
This Microsoft Page links to some project Templates:These have been built to bring in data from either Project online, Project for the Web or the consolidated reports which has connectors to both (but less information coming in initially).
I found they were a helpful place to start, and with a lot of YouTube videos and the Power bi Help forums (like this one) i was able to mush all my data into one dashboard.
Two points I would like to make:
Project for the web custom columns are NOT available in power bi at all;
Custom columns/fields from Project online are only available in power BI if they are an enterprise field, if the custom field is local to one specific project you won't be able to find it in the data for power bi.
You will need to find your Dataverse URL using these steps.
If you are missing any data/tables, you'll have to go into the Power BI Transformation section to bring the data in.
If you are unfamiliar with how to do that, I recommend duplicating one of the other query things, removing all the steps except source and following the bouncing ball through the data till you find the info you want... hope that helps!
