EMAIL FIELD MASKING and CONFIRMATION EMAIL

Looks like the customer email field only accepts alphanumeric strings, but NOT accepting HYPHENS or other special characters in the username - although this is a valid email name configuration. IE user-name@domain.com

This prevents sending a confirmation email. 

Can there be greater admin control over this field please or more flexibility in the email formats accepted.
