How to request 10 free M365 licences for NonProfit with a Godaddy M365 account
Hi,
our organization is eligible to M365 offer for non profit, but since we are client to Godaddy M365 , we are automatically redirect to ther logon page when we try to request licences on Microsoft interface.
We have contact Godaddy hoping they will remove those restrictions, in order for us to receive M365 licences, but they told us that if we want to move to microsoft they wil simply delete our instance so allow us to go for Microsoft.
Have someone face that issue? If there are advices, your are welcome.
Sorry for my english
Hi there,
I’ve helped many businesses through this same situation, and unfortunately, GoDaddy's version of Microsoft 365 creates a lot of limitations—especially when it comes to accessing Microsoft’s nonprofit benefits.
The good news is:
You don’t need to start over or lose data.
You can simply break the federation with GoDaddy (a process called Defederation) and bring your account fully under Microsoft’s control.Once that's done:
- You can claim your nonprofit licenses directly from Microsoft
- Get full admin access to all Microsoft 365 services (like security, compliance, and SharePoint settings)
- Avoid GoDaddy's extra charges for things that are free in Microsoft
- Enjoy transparent billing and better supportThe process is straightforward—just disconnect, assign the right licenses, update DNS, and you’re good to go. I always recommend this path to nonprofits looking for more control and access to the full Microsoft ecosystem.
Happy to share more if it helps!

Hello. I am making adjustments to my original answer as the option provided by Ahmed above is a much more feasible solution that doesn't involve migration. GoDaddy can make this process difficult, the defederation, but once this is done, your account can be converted to a nonprofit account.
- SoutienICopper ContributorThanks for your reply KenelleMoore. But I will like to know, should I re-apply in other to create a new adress? Or is there a way to link my new demand to the approuved one?

SoutienI I need to change my emails to the free account from Godaddy. How did you do it?

How do you do the defrederation and how to you move to Microsoft?

Great question!
The process is called Defederation, and it lets you remove GoDaddy’s control over your Microsoft 365 tenant—without needing to migrate or lose any data.
Here’s a quick summary:
- Access the real Microsoft admin portal (via portal.azure.com)
- Use Microsoft Graph PowerShell to convert your domain from Federated to Managed
- Reset user passwords
- Assign licenses directly from Microsoft (or a CSP provider)
- Remove GoDaddy as delegated admin
- Cancel your GoDaddy subscription safely
This gives you full control of your tenant, better admin access, and unlocks things like nonprofit licenses, security features, and advanced settings.
📘 I’ve written a full step-by-step guide here (with PowerShell examples and best practices):
