Help creating a custom table in a template

Hi! I'm cannot get formatting a custom table to work. I would really appreciate some help.

I have started from a new, blank document and this workflow; Home > Format as a table, but options are either greyed out or the design is not saved. In the preview, every second column is greeen, but when saved in the table gallery all settings are gone. What am I doing wrong?

    You need the "First Column Stripe" format, the second item in that list.

    I checked the Banded Columns checkbox, but I still cannot figure out how to create the custom table and have it appear as an alternative design in the Custom Design library. I have added screenshots to illustrate what I cannot figure out. Can you see a solution?

    Banded columns is not on by default and is not part of the table style (nor is row banding, but that is on by default). You must check the Banded columns check box on the Table Design contextual tab for them to appear.

      I still can't get this to work. I've added two more screenshots to help explain the issues/the custom table I'm trying to create. Maybe it's only possible to create with coding?
