Edge keeps signing me out
Since a week or two, Microsoft Edge signs me out of my MS account.
The top left account menu shows orange lettering, and when I click it, it reports that it can't sync because it needs to confirm my identity (first screenshot). I can then click Sign In, and don't need to enter my password or anything, just click Continue (2nd screenshot).
But pretty soon (like the next day, or sometimes even later the same day) the same thing happens again.
It never happened before two weeks ago. I'm not aware of any changes to my system or my account that preceded this issue. It's the same account I've used for years, and the password and 2-factor haven't changed in months.
What could be causing this, and how do I fix it?
ETA: Possibly related, because I noticed it at the same time and it seems to occur at the same moments: Microsoft Security and Defender stop responding. Both still show their icons in the systray, but neither opens when clicked. Only way to get around that is to kill all related process or reboot the system. And Security keeps showing the same notifications I've dismissed over and over again.
florismkleijne HP Elitebook laptop, Windows 11 (language Norwegian), changed from 365 work account to personal 365 account earlier this year. Login to Windows with personal account. Had this problem with Microsoft Edge signing me out all the time.
Possible solution: Opened Settings, Accounts, Login options, deleted all Hello options (face recognition, finger print and PIN). Recreated these Hello options. I guess there was a connection to my earlier work account in these settings. After restart of laptop there is no problem with Edge signing me out (so far so good day at one). Will report back later this week.

Same situation on my end. I did try to set "Require sign-in" to "Never" in Windows Settings - Sign-in option and so far Edge has not logged me out once, after 12+ hours of use. I will report back if this actually fixed the problem for me, in long term.
- florismkleijneBrass ContributorOh, you set me onto something! This option is actually greyed out on my system (it's blaming Hello for its unavailability). But I noticed that PIN was also unavailable, which is weird, because I've signed in with PIN only yesterday. This reminded me that I have Hello issues on my work system, and my work account is also configured on this computer. Who knows, maybe that's the culprit? I've removed that account, and after reboot, Edge was not signed out. So far, so good.
- imololCopper ContributorUpdate: The solution was effective for several weeks; however, my Edge browser is now starting logged out again or logging out randomly during work. I hope Microsoft addresses this issue or provides a workaround soon. It's not critical, but it is somewhat irritating.
- florismkleijneBrass ContributorTry removing all Windows Hello options. Re-add them after you've found that Edge stays signed in.
- karnerkreativCopper ContributorI have the same issue now for at least 6-8 weeks, daily in Edge, sometimes in Office. Tried a few things mentioned here and elsewhere but without success.
- imololCopper Contributorhave you tried to set "Require sign-in" to "Never" in Windows Settings - Sign-in option ? Since I set it to "never", my Edge has not logged out once.
- florismkleijneBrass Contributorhave you tried to set "Require sign-in" to "Never"?
I have not, and I don't feel that's a good idea at all. Wouldn't that basically remove all security from my device access? If I'm not required to sign in, no one is, right?
- RoyZ88Copper ContributorSame problem. Edge keeps signing out my personal account on both my work laptop as my personal PC. My work account does not have this problem.
- DaRkHeArTzCopper ContributorSame issue here, although it now seems to be happening more often and with other sites including Battlenet, Google & Twitter (Not Acknowledging X) just to name a few.
Also started happening after upgrading to insider Build 26040.rs, not sure if this was when the Bell Endz & M$ thought that when updating to the next insider build users would enjoy their current Edge version being automatically updated to DEV without being consolidated first, which caused a few issues, as it removed all cookies so I had to combe through my PW hints/notes for a few website passwords, as it had logged me out after the Windows Update.
FYI M$, Fix your software bugz 1st b4 you go ahead and assume you know what all your users want & need & proceed to include the $h!t3 anyway countless to whether we want it or not.
i.e. CoPilot or anything related to the cancer which is B!:ng_button:. - vlad_8011Copper ContributorI got exacly same issue. Few times a day, with Edge only, on Windows 10. Tried:
- System reinstall
- disabling windows hello
- re-adding my account
Everything seems to not work. At this point i'm going to switch to different browser. I'm really tired on trying to fix, what other (MS) broken.- florismkleijneBrass ContributorRemoving all Windows Hello options and then re-adding them helped multipe people, including myself.

f it. Im switching to firefox
- vlad_8011Copper ContributorMy man.. I have tried Vivaldi, now i'm trying Firefox, while still keeping Brave as plan B (no pun intended). I see a lot of problems with Firefox. I was using it ages ago, but dont remember it had problem with TABS. Every tab open, it is in the first plan, not in the background (PC), on mobile, every link open in new tab. Also videos on Youtube are freezing very often (only sound continue to work). As for Tabs issues, its long standing issue according to bugzilla and forums. I know it will be the only browser not using that V3 manifest, but they really have to fix a lot.

It's not an Edge related problem, It's a Microsoft account server problem.
I have the same exact issue and it happens randomly in:
-MS Edge
-Office desktop apps
-OneDrive
-Skype
-Teams
-Microsoft Defender
-Windows 10 Mail App
I have 4 different PCs and it happens on ALL of them. I also know 4 other persons that have the same exact issue.
The only thing in common is that it regards the Microsoft Account.
Take a look at this:
word and outlook keep asking me to sign in - Microsoft Community
It's a Microsoft problem and they refuse to acknowledge it
- florismkleijneBrass ContributorYes, it's an MS account issue, an a Microsoft problem, that is obvious. Given that Edge is a Microsoft product, that's kind of a distinction without a difference.
Have you tried removing all Windows Hello signin options? So far, that's the only resolution anyone has found that seems to work and keep working.- vlad_8011Copper Contributor
Hello not working long term, at least for me.
I have checked windows privacy settings, that apps have access to my account (YES). Then i checked settings at MICROSOFT ACCOUNT, there was some issue, i changed settings to proper, it fixed it. At least thats what i tought. Then trick with hello worked, but since 2 days its back again. I even reinstalled edge (you can now remove it).
BTW that setting in MS Account is in privacy > MS Account and Windows System.
- imololCopper Contributorsmall update : so far none of the recommended workarounds/fixes worked on my end, the problem always came back. But after recent Edge update, I had 0 logouts in Edge, so it seems MS actually did addressed this. Hope its the same for the rest of you.
- imololCopper ContributorNever mind... it's back. Every time I think it's fixed, it comes back when I post here. However, it feels like the frequency of logouts is lower.

In my case, none of the advice I found on the Internet helped. It took several months. Yesterday I did this:
1. I logged in to my Microsoft account and checked that synchronization is active.
2. I signed out of my Microsoft account.
3. I created a new profile and logged in with my email address.
4. The browser has downloaded the profile data and settings.
5. I deleted my old profile.Since then it didn't log me out automatically, everything is fine. An additional advantage is that the old profile was 3x larger than the new one. Good luck.
