Windows App, pasting files hangs OS
Hi all,
We’re experiencing an intermittent but frustrating issue when using the Windows App to connect to our Azure Virtual Desktop environment.
Issue:
When users attempt to copy and paste certain files from their local machine to the remote session, the operating system on the remote side hangs. The mouse still moves, and the clock continues to tick, but:
-Start menu becomes unresponsive
-Taskbar icons stop registering clicks
-Desktop icons are frozen
-No error messages appear
This occurs sporadically and seems to affect files of varying sizes and types — 100KB up to 20MB.
What we've tried:
-Updating the Windows App to the latest version
-Verifying clipboard redirection is enabled
-Using MSTSC, and the Remote Desktop Store App. These work but don't support Session Pools, Remote -Apps, or SSO.
-Using RemoteDesktop_1.2.6228.0 (MSI Install) Has the same issue as Windows App
Environment:
-Remote app hosted in Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD)
-Users connecting from Windows 10/11 clients
-Windows App version: 2.0.419.0, 2.0.420.0, and 2.0.500.0
All ideas welcome - is a major disruption to our business processes.

Have had an open ticket with MS on this same issue for a month and they've just asked us to try installing the latest Insider Release of the Remote Desktop Client (msi).
https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/previous-versions/remote-desktop-client/whats-new-windows?tabs=windows-msrdc-msi#latest-releaseInitial testing seems promising. Interestingly you don't seem to have to enable the insider release.

We also have a customer right now that uses latest version of Windows App and this issue is a pain for them. We have disabled UDP for now, but really hoping Microsoft will fix this ASAP so we can get back to UDP and leveage new UDP Multipath features :)

I was able to get it working by disable UDP on the client side.

We have been seeing this same issue with UDP connected users. they suddenly appear to freeze up but background services continue to run and even files uploading to a network share continue to upload. keyboard and mouse input is non responsive and never returns. They have to force disconnect and then reconnect to restore input. they are fine the rest of the day. this issue started with Windows App 2.0.419.0 version and on. tested on a system that still had version 2.0.366.0 and we could not recreate the issue. We can also recreate this same issue in the lab by very briefly interrupting the UDP stream. the session will soon freeze up and never recover. Our workaround right now is forcing all our endpoint connections to windows365 to TCP until MS figures this out. Not ideal but it's better than all of our users freezing intermittently each day.

Were you able to find a solution?

Same issue with Remote Desktop client for Windows and Windows app. I'm trying to rollback to a version before 1.2.6228 but can't find any download link on the Microsoft Website :/

We have similar symptoms, noticed from earlier this month. In our case attaching a file into the accounting app we use can cause a hang.
Other users on the same AVD VM also hang, indicating it's the VM having a problem.
BUT an odd thing, if we kill the windows app processes on the local machine, and reconnect, we then see an error which we can acknowledge and users can continue.

We have been relatively ok this week. After working through checks and adding resources to the VMs, I moved the most affected users to an alternate internet feed.
I wondered if the main service, which has two internet feeds, was an issue - either busy or moving between the two feeds.
Unscientific but it seems to have helped.

We can't seem to find anything that consistently fixes it apart from using another RDP client. The users are familiar with Windows App now, which despite this flaw has been rock solid.

Having the same issue here.

We have the same issue with the newest versions of the remote client.
A MS support ticket is also open.- ActionR45Copper Contributor
Good to know I'm not alone! If you have any success please post on here?

Is this occurring only during copy paste files ? I.e. if you copy paste some texts, is it working.
Also did you tried via web version ?

Yep, only during pasting files from workstation to server. Other way is fine. Text is also working.
