File Explorer is slow when traversing files synced with OneDrive
Hello team,
I have this customer who have this AVD deployment in production, they are managing with Nerdio and they recently move their storages to Azure NetApp. Event with this very optimized environment they are facing one specific issue with the OneDrive synced folders.
They created this video that explains the issue in details. They also opened a support ticket, but they didn't help with this issue. They are facing that for a while and they are asking for more assistance.
If anyone could have any clue would be great!
A video demonstrating the issue can be found here: https://rivier.hosted.panopto.com/Panopto/Pages/Viewer.aspx?id=203b5b74-07d9-4ec1-8da0-b02a015a0e18 (the demonstration starts at the 2m10s mark).
Thank you!

Insane that MS have still not fixed this issue.

Hi fr-ma
Thanks for this, I created a scheduled task that at startup, calls a powershell script:
Remove-Item -Path HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\SyncRootManager\* -RecurseI tested this and could see the reg keys are cleared and new reg keys are generated when users sign into the AVD session hosts.
Users are already confirming better experience now.
- OnzenHansCopper ContributorDoes it have any issues with files when collaborating with two or more users? We also have a Onedrive issue, but with FSlogix on Azure storage. Did not notice any any delay with in the explorer, but we see files being duplicated only when other users are working together. What is remarkable is, that when we edit and save the files online, another user does this, it can take up to 30 or 40 seconds before Onedrive updates the file. Even when we see the changes comming trhough within the file
- Oliver_KrageBrass ContributorSeeing the exact same thing. Traversing files in OneDrive/SharePoint takes 5-10 seconds each click. When opening files i would say 10-20 seconds!
I have searched a lot still with no solution 😞 Microsoft please help out.
TLDR: OneDrive/SharePoint not working great on AVD with FSLogix- OnzenHansCopper Contributor
Oliver_Krage Finally on our site it was another application. Ivanti Workspace control caused the trouble
- Oliver_KrageBrass ContributorHi OnzenHans Thank you!
The customer has Citrix Workspace installed. If i exit this it becomes faster.
- matmat86Copper ContributorHello, we have the exact same issue in our company. Did you found a way to solve that problem? Thanks.

Hello matmat86, unfortunately, not yet! I'm scaling this issue to Windows engineer group, because I believe that is related to Windows itself.

Hello sandrocpereira, your video explained the issue perfectly. I hope they can fix that. If you have any further informations let me know please. Thank you.
- tommykneetzIron ContributorI had / have same issue with my customers. Need to go back to Windows 10... unfortunally I havent found any solution yet. I belive its related to Windows itself...
- juhuaMicrosoftHi, these steps will cover general areas that could be impacting the performance or functionality of OneDrive in such a setup:
Ensure that OneDrive is up to date on all AVD instances. An outdated OneDrive client can cause sync issues.
Use the built-in OneDrive sync health dashboard in the Microsoft 365 admin center (if available for your subscription) to check for any reported issues with user sync status.
Implement OneDrive's Files On-Demand feature to reduce the bandwidth and storage requirements on each AVD instance.
Ensure that Known Folder Move (KFM) is configured correctly to redirect Desktop, Documents, and Pictures folders to OneDrive. This helps in managing user files more efficiently.
Verify that all AVD session hosts are optimized for performance and are not over-provisioned with users, which could impact overall system resources and affect applications like OneDrive.
Consider implementing FSLogix profile containers if not already in use, which can improve the performance and manageability of user profiles in AVD environments.- matmat86Copper Contributor
sandrocpereira did any of the solutions juhua offered help you to solve that problem, which is clearly visible in the video you posted above.

matmat86 This is the client. No, nothing has worked for us yet. After exhausting our options with Azure support channels, we opened a second paid ticket with the Windows team. The first paid ticket was closed without resolution.
We have ruled out FSLogix as an issue. We set up a demo with Windows 11 multisession vanilla from the gallery and no FSLogix profiles. Two users logged into the same oversized host using normal local profiles. The slowness in File Explorer was present.
Slowness is present whether OneDrive sync is running or not, or whether the files are available offline (cached) or in the cloud only. Slowness happens when you right-click a file, too.
Slowness is not present in PowerShell, the File -> Open dialog box, or third-party file managers. Slowness does not appear if you use the File Explorer navigation tree--until you click a file in the main File Explorer window.

I also have the same issue. Anyone can help?
- ErwinITHCopper ContributorThis is going on for years.
I have the impression a click or right click initiates some connection to a internet service and it's waiting for a response.
A couple of years ago a right click or creating a folder took around 40 seconds.
Now its around 6~10 seconds.
That's on a standalone pc.
When my laptop has no internet it takes ages to browse folders (on always downloaded folders).
That's why I strongly believe the computer checks every time something on the internet.
It doesn't matter if onedrive is loaded or not.
I started to believe the problem lies in the amount of files I have, but I don't have this problem on all my computers.
Gonna tries this registry thing to see if it helps, but I don't really see why it would help in my case.
All the entries are syncs I use.

sandrocpereira any luck on this? I have been looking into it myself and have the exact same issues as in your video. I have tried everything every forum has suggested so just wondering if youve found anything recently?
- Kyle_WiseCopper ContributorWe are also getting reports of the same issue from multiple users over the past couple weeks.
- JoshReaverCopper ContributorI have a call with the escalations team at MS in 30mins so if they finally try something other than uninstalling and rebooting the machine I'll update the post. This happens on a brand new install of Windows as well as existing machines so its 100% a bug they need to fix.
