Azure Synapse: What’s Next?

With the recent introduction of Microsoft Fabric, which aims to unify various data and analytics workloads into a single platform, how will this impact the future of Azure Synapse Analytics? Specifically, will Azure Synapse Analytics become obsolete, or will it continue to play a significant role alongside Microsoft Fabric? Additionally, what are the recommended migration paths and considerations for organizations heavily invested in Azure Synapse Analytics?”

    Hello,

     

    Microsoft has explicitly stated that there are no current plans to retire Azure Synapse Analytics. Customers can continue to deploy, operate, and expand their existing Synapse implementations. Microsoft has committed to providing advanced notice and adhering to the Modern Lifecycle Policy for any future changes.
    Coexistence and Complementary Roles
    For the foreseeable future, Azure Synapse Analytics and Microsoft Fabric are expected to coexist, serving different needs within the data analytics ecosystem:
    1. Azure Synapse Analytics:
    • Ideal for organizations requiring extensive customization and granular control over resources.
    • Better suited for complex, custom analytics solutions and established workloads deeply integrated with Synapse.
    2. Microsoft Fabric:
    • Offers a unified, SaaS-based analytics platform with integrated capabilities.
    • Provides a more streamlined and user-friendly experience, particularly beneficial for organizations starting fresh or seeking simplified analytics workflows.
