Azure Migrate Appliance

Hi,

We are planning to migrate 100 servers to Azure and are looking for guidance on deploying the Azure Migrate appliance. Due to space limitations on-premises, we do not have room to deploy the appliance locally.

Is it possible to deploy the Azure Migrate appliance in an Azure virtual machine (VM) within our existing Azure subscription? if so we would like to deploy the VM, install the Azure Migrate appliance, and then use it to assess, discover, and perform dependency analysis for our on-premises virtual and physical servers. Additionally, we are considering using the "Physical Server" option by downloading the installer script from the Azure Migrate appliance.

Can you please confirm if this approach is viable, are there any additional steps or considerations we should be aware of by deploying the appliance in Azure on a VM.

Thanks

You can deploy an Azure Migrate Appliance in Azure but that will require a network connectivity with your on-premises machines. Setting up Site to Site VPN will help you to achieve that. Also, since the data will be moving now over the VPN, there will be some bandwidth concern while moving these VMs but can be moved when using Appliance deployed on Azure.

Like this post if the solution helps.

    Thanks

  • Deploying the Azure Migrate appliance in an Azure virtual machine (VM) is not a supported configuration for assessing on-premises servers. The Azure Migrate appliance is designed to be deployed within the on-premises environment where the servers to be assessed are located. This is because the appliance needs direct access to the on-premises network to discover and analyze servers effectively.

      Hi,

Thank you for your reply, is there a document form MS states the same, if we have a Site to Site VPN or Express Route then i think there should not be any issue right.

      Thanks

Recently, we had to move two VMs from On-premises to Azure. I couldn't find a way to use the Physical Server Azure Migrate tool on a VM in Azure.

We tried a few things to get it working:
    -    We created Azure Site Recovery and set up a failover on Azure, but this didn't work.
    -    We copied the disk as a VHD to an Azure VM, converted the VHD to Fixed, then sent it to a PageBlob container in a storage account, and then created a managed disk to replicate the same VM.

This process takes time, and I don't think it will work for you, as you have to migrate 100 VMs.
