Azure Migrate – Ignite 2024 updates

Innovations and cost optimization

When migrating to the cloud, the expenses incurred (cost) and the benefits accrued (value) are both important considerations. Balancing costs and value are crucial because it helps organizations make informed decisions that maximize their return on investment (ROI). Among other things, cost calculations may include impact due to loss of business from planned and malicious events. Value in the cloud comes from agility in deploying and scaling and from productivity gains due to innovative technologies and tools.

For optimal performance and return on your investment (ROI), the recommendation is to collocate all IT resources and data in Azure. Once in Azure, you have access to responsible Artificial Intelligence (AI) services and expert advice to get you to the market quickly and gain a competitive advantage. Further, you can leverage Microsoft’s commitment to sustainability to reach your net zero goals.

At Ignite, we are announcing several impactful Azure Migrate features to help you move your on-premises workloads and manage in Azure efficiently. Azure Migrate is Microsoft’s free platform for migrating to and modernizing in Azure. It provides IT resource discovery, assessment, business case analysis, planning, migration, and modernization capabilities in a workload agnostic manner. You can run and monitor the proceedings from a single, secure portal. We are excited to share these new Azure Migrate updates:

Application awareness:

Starting today, you can assess your application's readiness for Azure using Azure Migrate. The new application aware method of assessment provides technical and business insights to help you migrate entire applications with dependent workloads, as one

You can now group dependent resources that belong to an application with tags. Once grouped, technical assessments and business case analysis (ROI/TCO) provide necessary insights at the application level to make informed decisions and eliminate surprises for all resources in the application group. This capability aligns with the collocation recommendation for optimal performance and cost. Complimenting this capability is the deep code and binary level analysis through the “App and code assessment” tooling available during Azure Migrate assessments. Tool guidance is based on workload type and desired IaaS or PaaS target:

For most migrations at the portfolio level driven by an IT operator, Azure Migrate is the tool of choice as it uses relevant discovered data for dependency analysis and to assess for Azure. For the modernization of .NET and Java web applications, we recommend Azure Migrate application and code assessments. The tool with GitHub Copilot integration helps your development team identify all dependencies to remediate before migration to Azure.

Refreshed user experience (UX);

A new user interface in Azure Migrate guides you through the various stages of migration. The guided workload agnostic flow gets you started with creating a new subscription and then steps through the various migration stages in an intuitive and logical manner. During the assessment stage, Azure Migrate presents a choice of first and third-party tools to meet your specific workload needs. Accelerate your migrations to Azure and get started on your AI transformation with a strong foundation in the cloud.

On-premises extension for VMware workloads:

Microsoft understands that some of your workloads such as those requiring near real-time response may stay on-premises. You can simplify operations at the edge for all your Windows and Linux virtual machines (VM) with a modern cloud connected Azure Stack Hyperconverged Infrastructure (HCI). We now have a feature which will allow you to easily migrate your VMware VM’s from vCenter to the latest feature release of our on-premises Azure Stack HCI. Here are more details on Migration from VMware to Azure Stack HCI.
