Universal Print capabilities in Windows 11 now available in Windows 10
Windows 11 got a head start on Universal Print capabilities, as summarized in our post on What's new in Windows 11 for Universal Print. Many organizations are still planning for Windows 11. To make that migration easier, we are bringing the same features to Windows 10, delivering on our promise that the Windows 11 upgrade is more like an update and that the experience of managing capabilities for Windows 11 and Windows 10 is consistent.
Starting with Windows 10, version 21H2 Build 19044.1806 (KB5014666), we have done just that. The enhancements that we added in the update are documented in Releasing Windows 10 Build 19044.1806 to Release Preview Channel.
Here is a brief overview of the Universal Print features, which are available today with this update.
PIN entry in the print dialog box when the printer reports it supports PIN release through the IPP standard. As of writing this blog, Epson, and Sharp offer PIN release with their Universal Print ready printer models. We will update the Partner Integration page with the latest information.
Microsoft Endpoint Manager printer provisioning support. IT professionals can use Intune to provision Universal Print printers to employee devices running Windows 11 and Windows 10.
You can find the detail in Laura Arrizza's blog, Universal Print settings available in Microsoft Endpoint Manager.
We have added the Print Support App (PSA) platform to Windows 10 too. The PSA allows printer OEMs to add finishing options and features as well as print workflows to the print experience without the need to install a diver. You can install these PSA from the Microsoft Store to your employees' devices as needed. This also opens opportunities for ISVs to create PSA that extend the print experience by publishing a PSA, things like adding watermarks, accounting code and other features.
In addition to these key features, this update brings enhancements that are already available in Windows 11 to Windows 10 clients.
- Consistent level of support for the Mopria industry standard IPP printer capabilities. Print finishing options such as stapling; hole punch; and others are now supported with a broader set of printers. Both Windows 10 and Windows 11 natively support PDF; PWG-Raster; and PCLm printers. Printer capabilities are refreshed each time you print to ensure any configuration changes done at the physical printer are reflected on the Windows client. In the case of Universal Print, admin configured printer capabilities takes precedence over physical printer reported capabilities.
