On December 14, 2021, all editions of Windows 10, version 2004 and Windows Server, version 2004 will reach end of servicing. After that date, devices running these editions will no longer receive monthly security and quality updates containing protections from the latest security threats.

We recommend that you update your devices to the latest version of Windows 10, or upgrade eligible devices to Windows 11. For information about servicing timelines and lifecycle, see Windows 10 release informationWindows 11 release information, and Lifecycle FAQ - Windows.

Upgrading to Windows 11

The availability of Windows 11 has been increased to an expanded set of eligible devices. We will continue to train our machine learning model throughout the phased rollout to deliver a smooth upgrade experience and provide you with the latest status updates as we increase availability over time.

If you are using Windows 10, you can determine if your device is eligible for the upgrade using the PC Health Check app or checking Windows 11 specs, features, and computer requirements. If you have an eligible device, open Windows Update Settings and select Check for updates. Once the upgrade is ready for your device, you will see the option to download and install. Commercial customers can utilize Endpoint analytics, Update Compliance, or other tools to assess readiness across their organization. For more information, see Understanding readiness for Windows 11 with Microsoft Endpoint Manager.

Windows 11 will have an annual feature update cadence. Windows 11 feature updates will release in the second half of the calendar year and will come with 24 months of support for Home, Pro, Pro for Workstations, and Pro Education editions; 36 months of support for Enterprise and Education editions. For monthly security updates, Windows 11 uses the familiar Windows cumulative update process, also referred to as a "B" release, Patch Tuesday, or Update Tuesday. These monthly releases will continue to contain all previous updates to keep devices protected and productive.

Windows 10 options

As shared by John Cable, we continue to focus on supporting the more than 1.3 billion monthly active devices on Windows 10. Windows 10, version 21H1 is ready for broad deployment today and the release of Windows 10, version 21H2 is targeted for the second half of 2021. Windows 10, version 21H2 will have a scoped set of features focused on productivity and security, prioritized to meet based on your feedback.

  • Mabel_Gomes Why is it that no matter what question I post I'm always given an answer that has absolutely nothing to do with my question? Not just here but in all of Microsoft's forums. What bothers me most is how I waste hours of valuable time trying to find a solution for problems caused by Microsoft "non-quality updates and fixes". Every update causes new problems and I spend countless wasted hours trying Microsoft remedies that will not fix what their update broke? My computes are brand new and nothing has been changed except what the updates change then instantly new problems. The question that lead me here was "how to do a clean install of Windows 10 home version 21H2" and all I see is info. about 2004 and Windows 11? I cannot see upgrading to 11 for fear it will be worse than 10. I came to the tech forum praying someone can actually offer real fixes and not dodging them problems. What happened to Microsoft? They used to be the best bar none and now have more flaws causing countless wasted hours and computer failures to include I'm sure countless people being terminated for not meeting production quotas. I've been on Microsoft website over 4 hours now and haven't gained any useful knowledge whatso ever. I'm now going to try to get what little work done that I can under the extremely slow conditions the update caused. It's not my internet nor anything other than flawed updates and it bothers me when people suggest that Microsoft couldn't possibly be the cause. It started the moment the update finished and successfully instantly rebooted and from what I'm reading I'm not the only one with theses issues. If there is a competent Tech out there I would appreciate some straight answers and repair fixes that actually work. Also If I have to do a clean install Microsoft should provide "secure" data storage as well as costs to replace any lost paid for digital apps and etc... that I have paid for and possibly loose because of a Microsoft flaw, Microsoft is worth billions of dollars they can afford to man up just like we do when we make a mistake. Thanks and have a wonderful Thanksgiving

Mabel_Gomes Thanks for keeping us updated on the latest release of 21H2. I have downloaded and installed it as well; however, it's not coming through Windows Update on the devices that already have 21H1 or 20H2.
