Lexmark has long worked to simplify the print infrastructure of our end customers. When the opportunity arose to work with Microsoft on a new cloud-based approach to simplification, we jumped in. Our current products include a Universal Print Driver, but our Lexmark Print Management on-premises and Cloud Print Management solutions also enable the printing experience that users demand with File -> Print expectations.

“Aligning with a cloud strategy is key for our customers as they continue down their journey for document optimization and infrastructure consolidation,” said Larry Early, director, Lexmark software and industry marketing. “Lexmark has a full product portfolio of devices that enable our customers to place the right device where it’s required within their business process. In partnership with Microsoft, we are committed to supporting initiatives such as Universal Print and working together on many other offerings to continue to enable digital transformation for our customers.”

When we started down the path of supporting Universal Print, we wanted it to be intuitive for all users of the ecosystem. While the proxy connector exists for all legacy devices, we have a firmware update available for each of our currently marketed products. For access to the firmware, visit Universal Print page.

Once the firmware is loaded, the registration is completed through our embedded web server as shown here:

Step 1: Initiate registration

Step 2: Once you have completed the authentication through the Microsoft portal, your device will return a status of online and registered.

Step 3:  Now the print experience is File->Print, which is the goal for Lexmark and our customers.

You can try Universal Print today with our marketed products. Please join the Universal Print community in Microsoft’s TechCommunity to get updates and provide feedback to Microsoft as well as to Lexmark.

For more technical details on functionality and requirements, see the Universal Print documentation.

How exciting!  Will support for this be added to any other (older) models in the future, or is it only going to be available from the current gen devices onward?

Our fleet is mostly made up of XM5263's, so I'd be particularly interested in whether that model will be updated to support Universal Print natively?

Our first priority was getting support for our currently promoted products through the firmware update.  We are actively planning our phase 2 release and this input will be valuable.  At this point our plan is to expand our current support and analyze our options for expanded fleet support.  Thank you for the interest, and for now we recommend using the proxy connector from Microsoft for that device.
