The April 2023 Work Trend Index Special Report continued to reinforce the known impact of employee experience on an organization’s bottom line, but it also highlights a new equation: that engagement and productivity are interdependent drivers of performance, mutually reinforcing each other for success. This reveals an ongoing opportunity for leaders to sustain long-term performance by equipping employees with the tools, flexibility, and insights that enhance their productivity and improve both sides of the engagement and productivity equation.
Organizations with high employee engagement are better equipped to handle market downturns and challenging economic conditions. In 2022, the stock performance of organizations with highly engaged workforces outperformed those with lower engagement levels. In fact, in our research, organizations with lower engagement scores lost 75% more value compared to the S&P 500. This serves as an important reminder that engagement is crucial, regardless of whether times are favorable or challenging. Other report findings show that engaged organizations are also more likely to inspire workforce confidence in leadership and trustworthiness through effective communication and building a feedback flywheel.
