If you’ve ever found yourself asking Copilot the same questions about the same set of files, project plans, meeting notes, specs, decks, you’re going to love Agents in OneDrive.

Agents in OneDrive are your personal AI project assistants, built directly from your own files and folders, allowing you to create an Agent that “knows” your content and delivers instant, tailored answers using different actions like:

  • Ask questions across those files
  • Get summaries and key decisions
  • Find deadlines, owners, and risks
  • Share the agent with your team so everyone can stay on the same page

Agents are saved as .agent files in OneDrive, just like any other document. Open one, and you’re in a full-screen Copilot experience tailored to that specific project or topic.

What can you do with an agent?

Your new agent can function as a teammate that is always available. Here are some great examples of how you can leverage your new agent:

  • Project hubs
“What are the latest decisions on a feature?”
“What are the open action items and who owns them?”
  • Onboarding a new teammate
“Explain how this team works using these docs.”
“Summarize our process for launching new features.”
  • Meeting prep and follow-up
“What did we decide in the last three sprint reviews?”
“List the key risks and mitigations from these documents.”
  • Research and analysis
“Summarize the main themes across these customer feedback reports.”
“List the key learnings from research notes”

Instead of jumping in and out of multiple files, you ask in one place, and the Agent responds using the content you’ve grouped. You will also have history grouped per project, meeting or research.

How to create an agent in OneDrive

You’ll need a Microsoft 365 Copilot license and OneDrive on the web to get started. Create an agent by:

  1. Using the “+ Create or upload” menu in OneDrive, then “Create an agent”
  2. Or, selecting files and choosing “Create an agent” from the toolbar or right-click menu

Pick up to 20 files, name your agent, add instructions if you like, and save. Your agent appears as a .agent file in OneDrive.

Using and Sharing Agents

You can use and share OneDrive agents much like any other file. To locate them, simply search in OneDrive and filter by the file type “Agent.” Once you open an agent, you can ask questions and receive answers instantly. You can also edit an agent at any time to add or remove files or update its instructions as your project evolves. If you need to collaborate, you can share an agent with your team just as you would share any other OneDrive file, ensuring that everyone has access to the source files so the agent can provide complete answers.

The features and capabilities mentioned in this blog post are demonstrated in the following video with Mithuna Soundararaj (Microsoft), Akash Ravi (Microsoft) and Vesa Juvonen (Microsoft).
