In order to focus resources on new technologies and operating systems, and to provide users with the most up-to-date and secure experience, beginning January 1, 2022, updates will no longer be provided for the OneDrive desktop application on your personal Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 devices.
Personal OneDrive desktop applications running on these operating systems will stop syncing to the cloud on March 1, 2022.

After March 1st, 2022, your personal files will no longer sync and should be uploaded/accessed directly on OneDrive for web.

If you are currently using one of these operating systems, we recommend upgrading your operating system to either Windows 10 or Windows 11 to avoid disruption. For machines that do not meet system requirements for Windows 10 or Windows 11 operating system upgrade, you can back up and protect your files by manually uploading them to OneDrive on the web, and continue to access, edit, and share your files on all your devices.

If you are using the OneDrive desktop application for business, starting January 1, 2022, support for this application will be aligned with the Windows support lifecycle.

Note: Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 are in extended support until January 10, 2023. Windows 8 reached end of support on January 12, 2016.

This is too bad. I use OneDrive on my work laptop which has Windows 10, but also on my home PC with relatively recent hardware that runs Windows 7. I have had no issues with the OneDrive app, other than recently having to update registry settings to enable TLS 1.2. The app is responsive, fast and works very well. I need to continue using it also on my home PC. I understand that since I connect to Sharepoint, I will be able to keep syncing files; nonetheless it would be nice to have continued support and updates.

So if the Business version continues to sync its not a matter of resources. After all this is just software that runs no matter what. While Windows has a long history of staying back compatible (can still run Windows 1.0 calculator on Windows 10) this move shows that MS no longer cares about its non-business users that made it what it is today.

Other cloud storage providers will read that announcement with joy.

That's it then. The last thing I will migrate away from Microsoft. Thanks for nothing. And thanks I never paid for OneDrive a dime (except with my personal data saved on it). Moving to private managed storage place.

As a fan of Windows 8.1 and long defender of its unique UX on the tablet and phone I have given up on Microsoft with the announcement of Windows 10.

    Good bye Microsoft.

Hello, what about OS W2k12r2 and W2k16 and this topic. Thanks a lot

  • b1k3rdude OneDrive for Business users on Windows 8.1 will still receive extended support through January 2023, aligning with the Windows support policy.

DanLhotka After March 2022, only personal OneDrive accounts will stop syncing on Windows 7, 8, and 8.1. OneDrive for Business, SharePoint sites, and company managed OneDrive folders are not affected and will continue to sync.

Does this mean that on Mar 2022 the OneDrive Sync App will no longer sync Sharepoint sites and company managed OneDrive folders?  Or is this just for personal OneDrive accounts?

So another obvious move by M$ to force users onto a newer OS, when there could many reasons for them not wanting to or needing to upgrade.  That and did you guys forget Windows 8.1 is in extended support till Jan 2023?
