Update under lock: Improved update experience for Microsoft 365 Apps

Are you or your end-users annoyed with update notifications? Do you struggle to reach compliance? Well fear not, because Microsoft has developed an optimization that applies a pending Microsoft 365 Apps update while a machine is in idle or locked mode, even if apps are running. We refer to this feature as update under lock, and it uses Click-To-Run technology.

Benefits of this feature

Update under lock helps you reach compliance within your timeframes without disrupting your internal users, and potentially reduces the need for abrupt forced updates, making updates more reliable by saving app state before closing. Zero notifications, zero disruptions!

How does it work?

If there are running Office apps, update under lock will try to shut them down only when safe to do so, apply the pending update, and restore any closed apps to their previous state. This process takes about four seconds.

A common scenario is for users to leave apps open on their device for extended periods of time. For example, if a user is working on a Word document at the end of the day, they may leave the document open and lock the device intending to continue working on it the next day. When users leave their documents open in this manner, it prevents Office from applying updates. With this feature, the user will come back to a machine in its previous state, but they will be running the latest bits.

Who does it affect?

Windows devices only for:

  • Microsoft 365 subscriptions, Visio, Project, but not Microsoft Teams, which has its own update process
  • Retail consumer/perpetual Office 2016, 2019, and 2021

All devices, regardless of update endpoint, that are receiving updates from:

  • Current Channel: Version 2109 or later
  • Monthly Enterprise Channel: Version 2112 or later
  • Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel (Preview): Version 2202 or later
  • Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel: Version 2202 or later

Safety and controls

Apps will not shut down if it is not safe to do so. For example, if macros are running or there are unsaved changes. If apps cannot shut down safely, updates are applied normally.

There are no admin controls for this feature. Microsoft is always optimizing your updates experience, and this thoroughly tested feature lives under the hood to make your life easier.

Version 2.0
  • Joseph Halpy This feature has already rolled out to all devices, regardless of update endpoint, that are receiving updates from:

    • Current Channel: Version 2109 or later
    • Monthly Enterprise Channel: Version 2112 or later
    • Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel (Preview): Version 2202 or later
    • Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel: Version 2202 or later
  • Hi @PadrePedro CSU_Scott

Thanks for calling that out. Both the Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel (Preview) and the Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel received this feature in version 2202. This feature is already out in both of those channels, for the duration since 2202 was made available to each of them, respectively. Hope that clears up any confusion!

    Hi PDave0115 ,

If you're only using managed mechanisms (WSUS, MECM,...), I guess it doesn't really matter. If you let the default automatic way do its work, yes, then it would be nice if this could be controlled somehow (including through GP). I hope MS informs us soon.

Not necessarily good news or bad news.  However, where can we read more about this? For an enterprise/corporate environment, this may be a bad idea if there is no "admin" feature to opt-out or not accept some updates.  How are the updates tested for compatibility with other software that may be running if it's forced?  Can the update be rolled back if problems occur?  Is there information about the update prior to the update being pushed?  Maybe I'm reading this info incorrectly.

How much control does the  parent organization have over which updates should be forced?

    Hi,

Thank you for this blog post! This is great and welcome news!

When may we expect this feature to come into effect? Also, it seems "(coming Jan 2023)" has been removed from the post for the Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel?

Considering the older versions which are required and the fact those are all from the end of 2021 and the beginning of 2022, may we conclude the feature is in fact there already binary wise for many months? And that the enablement has been/will be triggered now server side at Microsoft?

    Regards,

    Pedro

What does this mean for Office 365 that is updated with MECM/WSUS/Intune.

    Good morning,

I think this is a welcome feature.  Finding a way to update users' software without interrupting them is fantastic.

    Is this section correct?

All devices, regardless of update endpoint, that are receiving updates from:

    • Current Channel: Version 2109 or later
    • Monthly Enterprise Channel: Version 2112 or later
    • Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel (Preview): Version 2202 or later
    • Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel: Version 2208 or later (coming Jan 2023)

For the sake of clarity, could we compare it against Update history for Microsoft 365 Apps (listed by date) - Office release notes | Microsoft Docs?

This is a nitpick to be sure.  Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel is currently 2202?  Preview is 2208?  Am I misunderstanding that?

    Best regards,

    Scott
