Hi, Insiders! My name is Sonia Kulkarni, and I’m a Principal Product Manager on the Office Shared Services and Experiences team. I’m excited to share with you a new feature on Word for the web, Excel for the web, and PowerPoint for the web that allows you to easily find your files from the Search box in the header.
A faster way to find your Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files online
This feature enables you to easily search for your Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files when you’re working in the web app homepage. You no longer need to waste time scanning the homepage looking for the right file – just start typing your file name in the Search bar, and your file will surface in a drop-down list underneath the Search bar.
How it works
- Log in to your favorite app's homepage: PowerPoint.cloud.microsoft, Word.cloud.microsoft, or Excel.cloud.microsoft.
- Start typing the filename you're looking for in the Search box in the header, and notice that file suggestions based on what you type appear as you type.
- Click the filename you want to open it.
Tips and tricks
If you have not had any recent activity in a Word, Excel, or PowerPoint file, you may not see any file suggestions when you first try this feature. In that case, simply open an existing file in Word, Excel, or PowerPoint, and then refresh the page. Start typing the filename in the Search bar, and you should see your file listed. If you don't remember the file name, try typing in file metadata like author name (and see if that shows any suggestions).
Availability
This feature is currently rolling out to all commercial Microsoft 365 Word for the web, PowerPoint for the web, and Excel for the web users.
