Sharing My Journey and Inspiring Future Innovators

Introduction

The Microsoft Leap program stands as a beacon of opportunity, fostering innovation and bridging the gap between untapped talent and the tech industry. My journey with Microsoft Leap has been incredibly enriching, allowing me to share my experiences and insights as a Microsoft Employee. Speaking to cohorts from diverse backgrounds, especially the NFL Legends cohort last year and the 2025 Tech cohort this year, has given me a platform to share my story and be inspired in return.

History of Microsoft Leap

The Microsoft Leap program was launched in 2015 with the vision to bridge the opportunity gap for individuals from non-traditional tech backgrounds. By offering an immersive and hands-on learning experience, Microsoft Leap aims to develop the skills and confidence needed to succeed in the tech industry. Over the years, the program has grown to include various cohorts, such as the NFL Legends cohort and many tech cohorts, each designed to cater to the unique needs of its participants. Through its inclusive and innovative approach, Microsoft Leap has successfully created pathways for diverse talents to join the tech workforce, contributing to a more dynamic and inclusive industry.

My Experience with the NFL Legends Cohort

Last year, I had the privilege of speaking to the NFL Legends cohort. This unique group of individuals, comprised of former professional athletes transitioning into tech, brought a fresh perspective and an unparalleled level of determination. I presented “The Power of Mentorship to Unlock Career Growth”. Sharing my journey from being a newcomer, vendor, partner, customer, to twice becoming an FTE at Microsoft, I emphasized the importance of adaptability, curiosity, continuous learning, and the power of a supportive community. My talk was all about mentorship – how to find one and how to be one. The enthusiasm and curiosity of the NFL Legends cohort were truly infectious, I am looking forward to chatting with this year's group.

Engaging with the 2025 Tech Cohort

This month, I had the opportunity to engage with the 2025 tech cohort, a diverse and talented group representing various backgrounds and experiences. Speaking to them about my journey on a panel with three other Microsoft employees, I highlighted challenges and triumphs throughout my career. And discussed and how I went from theatre major at University of Washington to my current role of Principal PM Customer Experience building Community Programs for Microsoft 365. This cohort's drive and eagerness was awesome with terrific questions and comments to our panel.

Why I Love Speaking to the Microsoft Leap Program

The Microsoft Leap program is more than just a career accelerator; it is a community that fosters growth, innovation, and inclusivity. Speaking to these cohorts has been a deeply fulfilling experience for several reasons:

  • Inspiration and Motivation: Sharing my journey allows me to inspire and motivate others who are at the start of their careers or looking to pivot into tech.
  • Fresh Perspectives: Engaging with diverse cohorts brings fresh perspectives and innovative ideas that challenge my own thinking and approach.
  • Building Connections: The interactions provide a platform to build meaningful connections with future tech leaders and innovators.
  • Giving Back: Speaking to these cohorts is my way of giving back to the community that has supported my growth and success.
