TS: Terminal Server Group Policies
Description:
Terminal Server group polices refers to the implementation of Group Policy objects (GPOs) to the Terminal Services server to control the Terminal Server or Remote Desktop Server settings in an Active Directory domain.
Scoping the Issue:
When scoping an issue of this type, it is important to make the distinction between group policies that control Terminal Server or Remote Desktop Server settings and general group policies that might be applied to a Terminal Server.
Group Policies for Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2008 are located in the following container:

Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Terminal Services

User Configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Terminal Services
Group Policies for Windows Server 2008 R2 are located in the following container:

Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Remote Desktop Services

User Configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Remote Desktop Services
Most issues involving group policy on Terminal Servers are due to the policy not applying to the server, but other common issues also include problems with unintended or unexplainable behavior of group policy settings after they have been applied to a computer or a user.
Data Gathering:
In all instances, collecting either
MPS Reports
with the General, Internet and Networking, Business Networks and Server Components diagnostics, or a Performance-oriented MSDT manifest must be done. Additional data required will include the following:
· A
USERENV
log (Windows Server 2003) or a
GPSVC
log (Windows Server 2008)
· Directory Services-oriented MSDT manifest
· Details of the Active Directory domain architecture
· A
GPRESULT
report from the affected user or machine
· A policy settings report from
Group Policy Management Console
