Hi, Microsoft 365 Insiders! I’m Bola Soneye, and I’m a Product Manager on the OneNote team. I’m excited to announce a highly requested feature is now rolling out to Insiders: the ability to crop pictures directly in OneNote on Windows!

Crop pictures directly in OneNote on Windows

We’ve heard from so many of you that sometimes you just want to trim a screenshot, remove background clutter, or zero in on the important part of a picture without leaving OneNote. Until now, you had to rely on external tools before pasting the image back into your notes. Not anymore!

With this update, you can quickly crop any picture right inside your OneNote page, keeping your workflow focused and your notes clean.

How it works

  1. Open OneNote on Windows.
  2. Select an existing image in your notebook, or paste (Ctrl + V) or select Insert > Pictures to upload a new image.
  3. Either right-click on the picture or choose one of the following commands from the ribbon:
    • Picture Format > Crop: Then, use your mouse to drag the crop handles and trim your picture manually.
    • Picture Format > Crop with Keyboard: Then, use your arrow keys (← ↑ → ↓) for fine, precise adjustments to the crop area.
  4. Press Enter or click outside the picture to apply your changes. Your cropped picture is instantly saved in place!

Availability

This feature is available to OneNote on Windows users running Version 2509 (Build 19323.10000) or later.

NOTE: Cropped pictures are viewable across Mac, Android, iOS, and the web, but cropping is only supported on Windows at this time.

Feedback

This feature came directly from your feedback! We’d love to hear what you think about the new picture cropping experience: Go to Help > Feedback in OneNote to share your thoughts.
